Opinions on Thermador Range

Hi, I am looking for recent opinions/views on a Thermador range, specifically, Model PRG366WH. It's a 36" Gas range. I was all set to purchase this and now I am having second thoughts because of all the negative reviews about their customer service and reliability issues. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information. Some people swear by them and some swear at them. I am just not sure what to do. What are other good options besides Wolf?

No matter which brand I end up with, I will be purchasing an extended warranty.

Even though there are plenty of threads about this topic, I can't find any that are within the last twelve months.

Thank you in advance...

I have had our 36" Thermador gas range since our remodel 11 years ago (it still seems like our 'new' kitchen). We have never had a single issue with the range. I still love it. The only thing that is a slight negative is that the fan on the oven is a bit noisy...it stays on until oven cools to about 250 degrees after use. VERY small issue to me. I didn't know about the kitchen forum on Gardenweb until after we had purchased our appliances, and then read all the negative reviews, so I was always on the lookout for problems, but happily never had any!

We almost went with Thermador but we couldn’t get the BTUs on the rangetop - for some reason it’s lower than the range. So we’re going with the BS which also has mixed reviews, but at least has the performance we’re looking for.

We decided against a range this time because we’ve only used our current 36” Wolf range oven a handful of times in the 14 years we’ve had it. It’s huge and takes a long, long time to pre-heat. My understanding is that the newer ovens have a quick-preheat mode so look for that.

Our 30” KA wall convection oven has been the workhorse in our kitchen.

I’m on the same boat, OP. I’ve had my eye on the PRD366WGU and it’s dual fuel version. The only thing stopping me from making a decision is seeing all the negative feedback on reliability, parts, and customer service. Like you I can’t find much feedback on the newer models.

Right now I’m leaning towards a rangetop from Thermador or Wolf to avoid oven issues from both brands. For ovens I’m thinking Miele combi-steam and electric ovens.

We just bought the 30” pro harmony gas range and can’t wait to have it installed. We went to several high end appliances stores and they all highly recommended Thermador. We were able to see the stove on and it was very impressive. One store was pushing for the Viking because it could be delivered in two weeks. Everyone else told me to stay away. Yale appliances has some great blogs. Thermador repair rates are extremely low compared to other brands. The free hood was a great bonus.

We have the 36” Thermador Pro Harmony all gas range and it was installed two years ago. We both cook and love it. My husband cooks lots of stews and soups and we have never had such control over “simmer”. I am trying to think of something I don’t like about it but can’t. The gas oven heats quickly to 425 in 12 minutes unlike my previous KitchenAid double oven I bought six years ago. The oven has convection so I use that for even baking of pies. The cool down feature is not nearly as noisy as that KA and doesn’t run nearly as long. I did not choose the blue knobs, preferring to not draw attention to the range.

@Alan Glick Curious of your experience with Pacific @ bestbuy. I'm also thinking of buying a thermador from them and read some terrible reviews of their install. I'm in West LA, not sure if you are as well.

@Mallory Mazer. I was very impressed with their knowledge. The individual I have been dealing with was more knowledgeable than the salespeople at the so-called specialty stores. I haven't actually made the purchase yet as I had a couple issues to tend to first but i plan on finalizing all my plans by the end of the month and will start shortly after that..

The only issue with the Thermador is that it's on back order unt at least May, if not longer. But to be fair, almost all of the luxury style ranges are on backorder for the most part due to the coronavirus. So depending on the date I may have to make a change.

If the salespeople are as good as the one I've dealt with, you should have no worries about them at Pacific Sales.

And in response to you question of where I live, I am in NY, about 40 minutes north of Manhattan.

    Good luck...

@Alan Glick Did you get the Thermidorian range? How are you liking it?

@kellee elmerick I did not receive the range yet. I will be ordering it, along with my other appliances, this week. I was delayed with my project (due to covid) but hopefully it will be starting next week. I am looking forward to using it. I have heard some people complain about it but it seems to be the pretty reliable. Honestly, when you're buying an appliance with lots of features, there's bound to be a problem here and there. And all of the luxury brand manufacturers have issues. There's no way to avoid it, soI will be purchasing an extended warranty for peace of mind. If one of the electronic components goes it'll pay for itself.

@Alan Glick Have you received your range yet? If so, what do you think of it?

@fitfor94 As a matter of fact, it arrived the other day. Hopefully I'll be installing it within the next two weeks. My kitchen renovation is surprisingly behind schedule. But she is beautiful - even still wrapped in plastic!

As soon as the kitchen is complete I will post photos!

Which thermador hood did you get with the Thermador PRG366WH range. Alan Glick you said you chose the hood

@mshapses10 I will decide on a hood by tomorrow but none will be a Thermador. This has been the BIGGEST stressor of the entire renovation.

Unbeknownst to me during the planning stage, the 22" space between the joists where I intended to run the ductwork was filled with drain lines, vent lines, and water lines. What I initially planned would not work since there was not enough space to put in a 10" Round (or square/rectangular duct equivalent) - neither would an 8" fit, so I've settled on a 7" oval and have narrowed my choice down to three range hoods with 7" round outlets.

Which hood would you have chosen if this didn’t happen? Which Thermador hood?

What are you choosing as your free item then?

Also, did you see the stuff being written about the WiFi and other issues with the Thermador ranges?

I am late to this conversation, but will post nonetheless. I am waiting for service on all three Thermador appliances installed this year. There is ONE technician approved for warranty in the metro Detoit area.  I installed the 48" Thermador range with gas and induction burners in August, after waiting 9 months for delivery. My Thermador columns for fridge and freezer were installed around April of 2021. My ovens heat to whatever temp they feel like that day. My freezer door is not aligned with the fridge, and the pump on the dishwasher just went. These appliances all had very light use. Do NOT buy Thermador

Hi all! We bought a thermador 30 inch dual fuel (PRD305WHU) for our kitchen remodel this past year and really love it now. It takes an extremely long time to preheat, the preheat indicator light saying its ready will go off pretty quick but it really takes about 30 minutes for it to reach a reliable steady temperature where it wont fluctuate too much once you open the door to put something in (we used a Thermoworks digital oven air temp thermometer to check temperatures and fluctuations over a 1.5 hour period), but once its preheated it bakes incredibly evenly. Every single cookie and cake comes out exactly the same and perfectly browned and yeast breads rise appropriately (I bake *a lot*). Because it is an electric oven cakes and cookies tend to bake up flatter (a good outcone for later cakes so less levelling is required I find). The fan for the oven is, in my opinion, quite quite. Audible when on, but not loud in any way. The oven does make some clicking sounds as the control board inside cycles through turning on and off the various heating elements, which I first thought was a problem or defect but came to realize after poking around on the internet and talking to appliance repair specialists, is totally normal. The burners have been very good for everything I have put them through. They sear large cuts of meat (roasts, whole chickens, pork tenderloins, etc), chicken breasts, and steaks quite well and simmer things like beans or cream sauces at a very low temperature just as you would want. The grates are strong and substantial even for the heaviest Le Creuset pot I have. One thing I will say is that the extra low feature where the burner cycles on and off is a bit nerve wracking just because you hear that click sound when it ignites every time. I think its perfectly safe and it does work well for cooking things at really delicate temperatures. One thing to be aware of, because the burner is star shaped it does have cool spots in the center of the burner (the reverse of most standard ranges with round burners). This doesnt cause a lot of problem if you properly preheat your pan but is noticeable when making pan fried dumplings or browning a whole bunch of chicken thighs. One other odd thing that happened, when I used oven cleaner on it to clean the oven cavity (not using the self clean function) it burned out the oven lights, so I had to call to have them replaced. But it was very timely to repair. Thermador got back to our repair guys in about one week with the parts and its all fine now. Overall it has really been a great experience, just had to get used to the incredibly long preheat time. I cook a lot and really put that thing through its paces and am very satisfied.

Thank you for a very detailed review. I am glad you're enjoying it. I too am enjoying mine, as well. So far I don't really have any complaints - othe than the fact that I feel the grates are a little bit of a pain to keep clean.

My Thermador PRG366WH has been in use since the end of December 2021, but my kitchen has not been completed due to one problem after another. My unit runs on natural gas for the stove and oven. It does take time for the oven to preheat - but I am guessing since it's a 36" model, it will need more time. But I am almost never in a hurry, so it doesn't matter! The burners for the stove seem to work well. I personally haven't noticed any cold spots on the pans - but I haven't really cooked much other than a few things. Once the kitchen remodel is finished, then I will enjoy using it.

I also have a separate 30" Cafe wall oven (electric) that I use more than the one in my Thermador range. That is more of my go-to oven.

I will share these two pictures. Once I am finished I will share the entire kitchen.

@mmax14x3 What a beautiful kitchen. The under base cabinet lighting is a surprisingly nice touch. Can I ask you a question on the mounting of the pro-harmony range? I believe pro-harmony models are 24" depth "truly flush-mounted." Meanwhile your second picture appears to show the oven door sticking in front of the adjacent cabinet door by 1/2 to 1". Is there a reason yours is not mounted flush? I am in the middle of waiting for my pro-harmony myself and have talked to my GC about whether backsplash tile thickness behind the range would interfere with the flush-mount. However, it seems that you don't have full backsplash yet in your pictures so that may not be the reason for the mounting depth. Thanks.

@nanotube80 Thank you for the compliments of the kitchen and toe-kick lighting.

As far as the oven goes, I didn't realize that the oven would not be flush. It never crossed my mind for it to be flush. But the handle definitely sticks out. The good thing is that the microwave trim kit and the Cafe wall oven, are both have the same depth sticking out of the cabinet.

As far as the range goes, it's not completely pushed back against the wall yet. The stone company that did my countertops made a slight mistake, either when measuring and/or cutting, and the range will not go all the way back against the wall. It's off by about ⅛* of an inch! They're in the process of cutting a new piece, so when they installed a new piece, the range should go back against the wall.

As far as the backsplash behind the range goes, I have not made a decision the backsplash yet but I don't think it will impact whether the range will be flush with the cabinets or not. The lowest part of the backsplash starts where the highest part of the back of the range ends - if that makes sense!? Lol.

Our recently purchased Thermador Pro-Harm 30" Gas Range oven is a complete disaster when it comes to temperature control. Think temperamental furnace,

Right from the start of the pre-heat cycle, it spikes the temperature—set it to 350°F, and will jump up to nearly 435°F. Even after about 30 minutes, it only settles somewhat, continuing to fluctuate wildly, usually running 25 to 35 degrees hotter than the setting.

We logged the problem and had a Thermador technician come out to address the issue. Despite experiencing the overheating and temperature fluctuations firsthand, he didn’t fix anything. Rather he said ‘Thermador ovens run hot,’ suggested we try adapting recipes accordingly, and that we take a cooking class at the Thermador showroom.

WHAT? Instead of fixing the issue, we’re supposed to “do math” with every recipe, recalculating to adapt to an overheating over? And take a cooking class to learn how to work with a clearly defective oven?

For close to $5,000, you'd think this Thermador oven would at least hit and maintain its temperature. Honestly, our old GE range was more reliable—and cost a fraction of the price.

    UPDATE:

After four years of ownership, I’ve had zero issues. My only minor gripe is that the cast iron grates are tough to keep looking new, even with cleaning after every use. That said, I have no regrets about choosing this range.
