i can see the look of what i call the bush H ... but it doesnt die back in my MI ... so wouldnt leave those canes ...

Lonicera sempervirens is also called Trumpet Honeysuckle. L. sempervirens is a vining honeysuckle. This Lonicera looks like the bush type, so that fact, along with the wider, more deeply veined leaves, and it's location all seem to fit Lonicera maachii.

2 inch leaves might be a bit small for that one. Of course, it is not a large specimen - the leaves could be checked with a magnifier to see if the midveins look like this:

Yes you're correct. Could be japonica or tatarica also. Maybe best to wait until it flowers, or better leaf photos.

Doesn't have the twining habit of japonica.

I still think it's L. maachii. based on leaf shape. Maybe another round of leaf measurements from shortest to longest. Fragrantissima is a problem in that area, and absolutely no observations of tartarica. Wow you have japonica in your area too. Is it a problem there as well? The battle of running bamboo versus invasive bush honeysuckle. I think the honeysuckle ultimately loses.

I don’t think the picture shows L fragrantissima. The leaves are the wrong shape and texture. Fragrantissima leaves are longer, blunter and are distinctly rough textured. It would be good to know what time of year the picture was taken.

But, it has darker, narrower leaves and I don't think has a bush form?

It could also be a hybrid? Japanese honeysuckle could potentially climb the bamboo in a Kudzu - like manner and kill the bamboo if it was Japanese honeysuckle, which it isn't.

This may be the same plant as these with berries shown...just found on the other side of the same trail?

By far, the most common invasive honeysuckle in the DFW area, followed by L. japonica, L. fragrantissima is more rare, as are the native L.sempervirens and L. albiflora.
