stair dilemma with new flooring

We just had new floors put in our split level house. The knuckleheads who we worked with didn’t communicate what was gonna happen with the stairs, and this is what we ended up with. I’m struggling to figure out what we can even do with this. Seems like a new skirting would be out of the question since you’d see the edges in the front. The flooring place recommended using drywall mud to finish the edges. Any suggestions?

It depends on if you painting the risers? If so just sand it smooth, use drywall mud and prime it.

If not you can get iron on veneer at hardware store that matches other veneer to finish edges.

I wouldn’t do white trim or drywall mud if you’re keeping them wood. I don’t know how to explain it, but that would look bad.

Whether you are painting the risers or staining them, my approach would be the same. I would use the iron on tape edge veneer, as suggested. Then patch the white plaster(?) wall where necessary. Color match the stain on edge trim if staining, or paint the risers and edging white. The edge veneer will smooth out the raw edge nicely to except stain or paint and look nice and finished.

Did they do a bullnose return back to the plaster on the back of the step edges? It's hard to tell from this angle.

Is there room all the way following down under edges for a small trim painted the same color as walls? Does that make sense?

Ask the GC how s/he will deal with the eyesore the subs made.

Thanks all. Yeah we haven’t paid in full yet so I’m going to push back and have them finish this before we cut the final check. This was part of an $11k job and I was pretty flabbergasted that they just walked away with the stairs in this shape. Will ask them about a veneer siding.

Do you know how much the stair job cost? Usually stairs are several thousand on their own. What used to be on the treads?

I've seen stairs cost $6K - $12K on their own. I'm going to guess they did not realize how expensive stairs could be and cheaped out as soon as they could.

I'm sorry to say but it looks like the stair portion wasn't bid properly....they bid too low for the complete project. A stair is a VERY expensive renovation. It can DOUBLE the cost of the original job. That means the first part of your job was worth $5,500 and the stairs would be worth $5,500 (which is about right). But I'm guessing the job was worth MORE than $5,500 and it ATE into the stair job...

Let us know the extent of your project (what was done...total square footage..etc) and how long the workers were at the house and we will figure out how much it *should have cost.
