I like the stone it classic but i don’t like the black mantel 🤷🏻‍♀️. We all have different taste. Im guessing u don’t like the stone so do what pleases u. Its a pretty room and i love the floors The whole room just very nice

I feel there’s nothing inherently wrong with the stone - but the room decor looks more classical (esp. the floor), and the stone seems too rustic for the space. I would think about replacing it.

In making this decision, ask yourself how long you intend to stay in this location (a question of resale value). In my opinion, do nothing to the stone, but balance and enrich the look of your fireplace by painting the back panels and shelves of the bookcase ( including the two small doors on the lower right), a tan that is similar to the colors in the stone. Leave the rest of the room white. Then carefully place objects in the bookcase once the paint has completely dried- some wood, some books, maybe some brass pieces. This will create an elegant, but rustic focal point for your room.

Yes. That is what I’m thinking. Sounds like you have experience in that. I’m worried about the way the “German smear” looks up close. In the picture it looks good. If you get close to the stone do you think it still looks good? Some people have suggested a very dilute latex wash. But from my experience the stone doesn’t look right after that.

no latex paint. if you want natural, use the Romabio. you can dilute that if you like.

look into Em Henderson and her mortar wash.

I like the idea of the wash (either application) because it will let those floors be the star. the stone is ok too, but lime washing it won't detract from it.

between the dark floors, the beams, and the different browns in the stone, they somewhat compete. making them lime washed will span the other two

I think lightening the stone will make it look less rustic. Your built ins and the floor are much more elegant than the brown stone. Making the stone more uniform in color would make it clash less with the floor

Rustic items might include the dark chandelier - are some door black metal? idk why the stone should be contrasting in lighter tone? If the floor needs refinishing maybe a stain of the lightest in current wood.
