Front Door Color

We are building a house and it was supposed to be stone. After months of waiting on materials and the mason, long story short, I had to pick a brick. For 2 years I had decided I would paint the shutters and doors "Pigeon" by Farrow & Ball. These all say they are Pigeon, but who knows?

My painter just painted one door with a primer and it looks too dull or gray. I don't know if it is the paint or my brick. Are any of you color experts who could give me some color suggestions that would look good with my brick? This is it below. Thanks in advance.

Pigeon is a low Chroma, near neutral from the middle of the Green Yellow Hue Family. In some lighting, it may looked more greyed, knocked-back. In other settings more of its inherent greenness maybe discerned. And in some imbalanced lighting, it may even have moments of blueness about it.

If you find it reads too grey for you than it is worth considering colours with more Chroma (colourfulness).

Quickly measuring the colours of a random selection of your brick sets them in the

    Yellow-Red Hue Family between 52° + 72° degrees.

If a green is what you are after, here are a few more from the Green-Yellow Hue Family.

Each has more Chroma than Pigeon, so they are more colourful than Pigeon.

(But I have to say I like the colour of your front door next to your brick!)

The green-gray is the way to go.

I would go with a deeper green-grey paint on the door.

Marylee H, thank you! That was very helpful. Just looking at your samples next to my brick I kind of like Benjamin Moore's Flora and Mistletoe. But you like the color on my door currently? You do not think it is too drab?

I like Mistletoe and the one below it--get some paint samples and paint a couple of boards, set them against the brick.

Personally, I do think the gray is drab next to the brick.

Yes, current tone is too drab. Don't worry about choosing particular color name. Instead, choose what looks good and then find the color.

I do like it. Why not just view it a few different times, in different lights first?

(But I come from the north of England & these greyed-out colours play well with our flat light. Not the same for everyone, I realise.)

And certainly your brick can most definitely support both darker colours and/or more colourful colours, if you fancy a little more intensity.

So it maybe helpful to know that colours have measurable dimensions.

Hue - in which Hue Family a colour belongs & where within it sits.

Value - how light or dark? (Higher the number = lighter the colour)

Chroma - how colourful/neutral? (Lower the number = the more neutral the colour)

LRV - how much light it reflects? (Higher the number = more light it reflects )

All of the above can be tuned-in, or altered separately, to find the colour you prefer, for your taste, in your context with your available light.

Lower Chroma and much darker from the Green-Yellow Hue Family

Lower Chroma & much darker, from the neighbouring Yellow Hue Family.

and for a final spanner in the works, here are blues from the complementary Hue Family!

P.s. I have to own that Flora is a fave of mine with warm brick!

Marylee H, I love the houses in England and especially their kitchens! My favorite show lately is Escape to the Country, a show from the UK.

I have narrowed it down to some favs. Overlook the door which is Pigeon.

    Flora by Benjamin Moore...

    Halcyon by Sherwin-Williams...

Green Blue #84 by Farrow & Ball...

    Dix Blue by F&B...

    Sea Star by Ben. Moore...

And to throw in a wild card, Charlotte Slate by Ben. Moore...

If that is only primer on the door, wait until you get two coats of the actual paint, it may be exactly the color of the paint you originally wanted.
