Comments (98)The second owners of my house were a couple who got divorced when the wife, an elementary school teacher, got involved with the principal. The husband tried to commit suicide in the garage, but someone found him first. That doesn't bother me, which is good as someone did commit suicide in the detached garage of my current project house I imagine that murder would bother me, even though suicide doesn't. There was a drug related murder in our area several years ago and that house ended up getting torn down which probably would have happened eventually anyway. Hubby and I aren't really superstitious but we turned down one house for its history. It was a large Victorian in a smaller NW Illinois town which was being reconverted from a doctor's office to a residence. The property had been cut into small exam rooms which was easily fixable and could have been a nice house. Only when we toured the basement were we told that the house had been a funeral home. There was no specific equipment remaining, but there were a couple of unusual rooms with access to the garage....See MorePOLL: Do you have a disaster preparedness kit?
Comments (95)I prepared one a few years ago. I used to have a duffle bag filled with what I call the immediate essentials. Flashlight, batteries, portable radio, water, band-aids etc. Then i started thinking on abgrander wcale so in addition to the shuffle bag I have a blue trashcan on wheels (recycle can) in case i need to run on foot with it. Ok everyone calls me "overkill" so in that can i have enough to last at least 3 days, 3 weeks, or a month. Case of bottled water at the bottom, blanket, toilet paper, can foods that open without a can opener, matches, etc.... and most all i think it is important to have a whistle. You might have to blow to make some noise to help someone locate you.....ijs...See MorePOLL: Have you ever lived abroad?
Comments (214)In responding to your question, have you ever lived abroad. Yes, and it was quite an experience. We arrived shortly after a civil war had ended and to get to our home, we had to go through a Military Guard Post. Just imagine being stopped and recognized with a gun pointed at you before you could get to your home. It was an inconvinence, but now I simply include it as another adventure in my life. This was in Enugu, Nigeria, West Africa,1973....See MorePOLL: Crib bumpers - Yes or No?
Comments (36)My point is we learn. Things we once thought were good for babies (or children or ourselves for that matter) we've come to know that they aren't good for us. Crib bumpers are one of those things. Some localities have already outlawed selling them, and it seems likely that more will because they don't prevent injures, rather they cause them. There will come a day when people will look back and say I can't believe we used to do that - just like not using a car seat, playing with lawn darts, putting lead in paint, or taking laudanum for the vapors... This wouldn't be the first time something that was made to prevent a danger or provide a huge convenience ended up being a worse problem... Asbestos was considered to be a wonderful fire proof product, until we found out that it causes cancer. DDT was perfect for killing mosquitoes and prevent malaria, unfortunately it killed a lot of other things too. Thalidomide - great for morning sickness, but also really good at causing birth defects. Let the crib bumpers go.. they aren't necessary and even if it isn't a massive epidemic, any baby that dies because of one was a baby that died needlessly....See Moregsciencechick
