Wooden stairs: paint or no paint

We live in a fixer-upper, and have added some modern elements like the new hardwood floors, but we like the charm of the house which was built in the 1960's.
There are two sets of stairs (it's a side split house), both have the same hardwood at the bottom, and have the original wood that was covered by carpet.
Should we paint them out or refinish them to try and match the new hardwood? Either way they will each get the same carpet runner.

Personal preference - but aren't carpet runners generally with wood steps rather than painted? Plus if you ever took off the runner it might be easier to still work with the steps (assuming you aren't going to completely carpet them instead).

Yes, this is one of those rare moments when I am in favor of stain. Paint will be an upkeep problem on stairs.

Oh please refinish them! I hate to see good wood painted. That and the paint might end up chipping on the stairs.

The wood on these steps is too nice to paint. I would try and match the stain if possible.
