Propagation update

last modified: 5 years ago

Wanted to share my setup for this year, and some photos of how things are going

This is the whole setup. West side of the house, underneath the deck, and above the deck is an awning. 4'x4' raised bed with poly tent. The interior walls are lined with foamboard insulation. And yes, I will be building a second one of these to go right next to this one.

Cuttings are stuck in coco coir and perlite mix. Heat mats are 20x48, hooked into a thermostat and set to 68dF (I would do 60 but 68 is the lowest setting on this thermostat model).

The lowest low in this box has been 32dF. We've had several nights below 23dF so far this winter, and average daily low throughout Dec was 30dF . Highest high at 57dF. Humidity has been great, average is 85%. I have to unzip the window different lengths to adjust the humidity level (this poly tent could benefit from a vent)

This is a golden Green Giant arborvitae I discovered and am progpagating. It is gold all year round, but really shines in the winter. The grounds manager where I found this tree said it's located where the plowman always dumps the snow every winter. Maybe the salts did the mutation?

These cuttings were stuck on Novemeber 28th. First roots were observed this morning (hence the post)(and I won't be pulling anymore of these up to check on them!)

Even this Goldfinch Magnolia (which supposedly you can only root as a softwood cutting) has put on great callus in this system. We'll see if it pushes roots.

All products are linked! I made this system for less than $200. At 2 inch spacing you can fit over 500 cuttings in here.
