Any of the Jersey varieties (Giant, Knight, Supreme) are supposed to be predominantly male but take that with a grain of salt because you may still get 10%-20% female crowns. These are all hybrid types that are bred to be predominantly male but not all male. I would think all three would do fine in your area. You can always cull the females when they show their gender if you want. After one season of females producing seed, you should have some seedlings sprout the following spring that you can use to replace the female crowns and hope that they are male.

I have Jersey Supreme, Purple Passion, and Pacific Purple here, about 25 of each. I prefer the purple varieties because they produce consistently thicker and more tender spears than the Jersey Supreme. The number of female plants is about the same on all 3 types in my garden, maybe 20%. I really can't tell the difference in production between male and female plants.

Debruyn seeds has the best prices I have seen on asparagus crowns although I purchased my purple varieties at Nourse farms. Debryun has both Purple Passion and Jersey Knight 2 yo crowns.

Nourse farms has all 3 of the Jersey varieties as well as Purple passion and a couple others but they are a bit more expensive although they are offering free shipping that may offset some of the higher price.

Depending on how much bed space you have allocated you could always get more than one type.

LoneJack- Have never tried the Pacific Purple- How does it compare to Purple Passion?

Stephanie- I think you will be very happy with the Purple Passion Asparagus- It is by far the best tasting variety I have ever grown. In fact, It is the only variety I ever eat. The rest I sell at the farmers market.

Tom - I really can't tell much of a difference in taste, spear size, or production between them. I have noticed that Purple Passion is usually a week or so earlier to start producing and the beds are both the same age (IIRC 5 years this spring). Nourse farms appears to have dropped Pacific Purple from their offerings so maybe that is a sign of it's popularity or lack thereof.
