at least twice the width of your widows or more.

Curtains should most likely cover more than just the window's width. Curtain width should be at least twice the width of the area you want to cover. Posting a picture would get you more responses.

So you're saying at least 144 inch wide pael on each side correct?

2 144 inch panels or 2 72 inch panels for a total of 144 inches?

You need to go by the size of the rod, not window, which in your case about 94 to 95" would be ideal. If you're getting readymade panels, they usually come in a 50" flat width, so two 50" panels on each side, total 200". I don't think they come in 72" or 144" AFAIK.

Spiffy Spools makes custom curtains 94-95" wide as does Stoneside. West Elm does too although they are a bit more expensive. All would allow you to have just two panels (instead of 4) and get the ~2.5 coverage shadeylady2u seems to suggest

I only want a 1 panel curtain to pull to one side most of the day on a sliding glass window

window is 72W

1 drape at 50 W is not enough

would 2 curtains at 50W each be appropriate or too much ?

sliding glass door...

Generallly speaking curtains should be twice as wide as the window, at least. Sheers should be at least 3 times as wide. Three 50" panels would be just about twice as wide as a 72" window.
