Finishing up old projects

My first post of this disappeared. Will try again. I tend to applique or piece something to keep busy and then throw it in a drawer. I've decided to pull things out and finish or get rid of them.

This panel was made at least ten years ago and I got tired of seeing it in the drawer. It is a pattern from Quiltmaker magazine from 1999. They called it "Partridge in a Pear Tree". Well, where I come from the partridges don't have that top knot. So I call it "Quail in a Pear Tree". I took the red out of the border so it could hang other times of the year.

As most of you know, quilting an applique is very challenging. Some give up and just do an overall design. I preferred to follow the applique as you can see. My next challenge is a large quilt I've appliqued that I plan to start quilting when I get the sashings and borders on it. Or, I may post a picture of the "flimsy" and put it away in that drawer. I suppose Covid is helping me make that decision. Quilting is keeping me sane as I stay at home more than usual. Applique is my salvation at this point so I'll need to find another project soon.

I'm thinking of all of you during this pandemic. Stay well and keep in touch with us even if only a comment now and then so we know you are there.

That is simply wonderful, Linda. I love the red shading on the pears. I know how hard the hatched quilting behind the appliqué is too. I did that once with a much larger hatch and more open space. It must have been very hard to do it on your quilt. The width of your branches is so consistent. You do a fantastic job of appliqué. And it was so clever to keep the red out of the border, so you can enjoy this beautiful piece all year round.

Yes, Bev, those were dying scraps of mine. That's how I got that red on the yellow. And, then I fussy cut out the pears to use it up. I have so much dyed fabric to throw out. I'd dye 3 or 4 pieces before I got the color I wanted and then had those pieces to throw in a box. So there was lots. I gave a lot to my daughter to use on backs. I don't dye much anymore but would if I needed something specific. I remember us doing it at retreat, too.

Linda your work is beautiful as always. I would hang it on my wall anytime! I love the look of hand applique. I wish my hands would allow it. I guess we all have our gifts and yours is definitely applique. And those hand dyes! OMG they are divine! I missed the year at retreat when you did that. I hope you and your husband are doing well during this crazy time.
