splitting into small bedrooms?

last modified: 5 years ago

I'm in the middle of buying a new house and our current favorite is a 3 bed 2 bath with 2 kitchens. We have 4 kids (3 boys 1 girl) so we need at least 4 bedrooms. One of the rooms is oddly long (22x7) just off the living room. Would it be beneficial to split that room into two 11x7s for future sale of the home? Would an addition be a better option since there are 3 acres?

Need more information. Can you post plan of all levels? For example, where is closest full bath? Are there other areas for children’s activities aside from this living room?

Yes, so there is a full bath on this level and a half bath in the walkout basement. The basement also has a 9x7 office we were considering making like a play room/ video gaming area, there is also a second informal dining room and 25x12 rec room/living room in the basement. My boys are 13,9 and 5 and my daughter is 11 for reference

That doesn’t look like a bedroom. It looks like a porch they enclosed. If your boys can’t share a bedroom, you should look at bigger houses. Why can’t they share though?

    what's your next favorite house?

@User technically there is no reason they can't, but putting 3 boys in a room gets tight. This house definitely doesn't have rooms big enough for 3 boys.

@Angel 18432 our next favorite is a 5 bed 2 bath with 500 more SQ ft in town, so less yard more house. The acreage is really the only thing giving the house above the edge.

I would keep looking. I think you can find a house that suits your needs much better. 7 ft width, is way to small for growing boys rooms. It might work for small children, but, yours will soon be teens, and will want their own space, and that space is just to narrow, to work out well.

IMO tha space is big enough for 3 boys but IMO a poor space for a kids bedroom and I agree looks like a porch Why 2 kitchens maybe on of those can be a bedroom. We need a ton more info and an actual to scale floor plan of the whole house.

Hard pass on this one. 7' wide bedrooms? No. Will have to cut another opening for a doorway which will mess up furniture placement on the living room wall.

The allocation of space will feel all wrong. Two kitchens, a huge rec room vs 2 tiny bedrooms?

Is there drywall behind all that wood? Just toooo much wood for my taste. Has a scary firetrap look to it. I really hope there is drywall behind the wood.

I totally understand why you want more acreage, but the house does not fit your needs and you will all be inside more than outside. As suggested look elsewhere.
