Buying a red maple in Greater Boston

I’m planning on replacing a dying rhody with a wide spreading red maple. The problem is that the last time I wanted a red maple, I had a lot of trouble finding one I liked. I wound up buying from Mahoney’s in Winchester, but their selection wasn’t great (though the tree I got is doing wonderfully).

I’m thinking of ordering a Red Dragon from The Tree Center in Maryland. I’ve never ordered any plants bigger than a 4” pot before.

So my question is whether there are any better suggestions for Japanese maples around Boston, specifically the low growing (5-6 feet high), wide varieties? Or does anyone have experience with mail order of trees in 3 gallon pots?

Things may be very different on the east coast but here on the west coast, Red Dragon is a popular enough and common enough variety that even places like Home Depot sell it......in season. And in a decent size and for a decent price.

Might be worth waiting and checking out.

website won’t be open until March, but I have mail ordered trees here and recommend if you are considering mail order. There’s no substitute for picking a tree in person, but this is a good resource if you don’t have local options.

If you prefer to use a local nursery, you can ask Russell's in Wayland to order what you want. I also like Stonegate in Lincoln.

It would be worth a trip to visit Broken Arrow Nursery in Connecticut to see a large variety and bring home the one you want in a nice big pot...
