H daylilies 2021
Today is for the H daylilies.
Quote of the day: “ if you are wrong and you shut up, you’re wise. If you are right and you shut up, you’re married.”
Happy Apache has been slow to establish. It’s different than anything else I have so it stays, I like the blooms.
Happy Happy is getting established. Blooms have opened well.
Hawaiian Swirls has done well .
Hemstitched has been a great performer. This is a bonus that I’m glad I receive. Blooms always open well.
Hearts Abound has been a very good performer, has multiplied nicely. The blooms are more white than they appear in this photo.
A tall oldie, Howdy, had an off year this past season, first time for a less than desirable blooming.
Heavenly Curls is getting established.
Heavenly Hidden Treasure was new last season.
Her Best Bloomers was in the running for Best bud count, I think it finished in second place. The color is wonderful, hard to capture correctly, this is a taller daylily.
Here Lies Butch, love the bloom, hate the name. My son lost a dog named Butch a few years ago. This bloom has the fattest edge in the garden and opens perfectly every time.

Here's my contribution to H's. Honky Tonk Barbie. This Selman daylily grows so well here that I forgive the fact that it does fade to paler pink in our 90-100 degree heat. It reliably repeats and this bloom is on a repeat scape after a burst of rain. I think the petals held up pretty darned well to the rain. A good daylily overall.

HEMAN: Can be splotchy, but it is a heavy bloomer and blooms for a long period of time.
Half Moon Key: Can be splotchy at times, but is another great bloomer. One of the few Petit intros that I grow. It does reach its registered height.
HANDWRITING ON THE WALL: Not as prolific as the other two, but an interesting bloom. Flower is smaller than registered.

HOT SEAT: This certainly gets my attention. Wish the blooms were bigger.
HONEY ON MY LIPS: This is a great plant. Tall scapes, many blooms, blooms for a long period, good branching.

Happy Place is new to the garden. I hope it will set seed.
We wanted Heavenly Be My Valentine because it is an offspring of Tet. North Wind Dancer. It's not graceful like North Wind Dancer, but it's a nice big flower with deeper color.
Heavenly Bengal Tiger doesn't get as tall as its registered height nor are the blooms very large, but it grows well and is often early to bloom on left over scapes. It's in a bed that has too much shade. Maybe its stats will get better since the nearby tree was cut down last fall (half of the tree was dying).
Heavenly Christmas Cactus is a big vigorous plant.

Heavenly Dark Knight is the only tet I know of that has blackish scapes. They are not as dark, though, as dips such as Sir Blackstem.
I like the flower on Heavenly Whirly Bird, but the scapes are not very strong.
Hell on Heels is a wonderful later blooming (ML) variety.
Hey Soul Sister is one of my favorites of the super dark ones. On some days, it has solid coloring and on other days, it has this smoky effect with a dark eye. I got some seeds from it last year that I am really excited about. We lucked out on this one--it was a bonus. We got rid of all of the others we bought from this hybridizer but we kept the bonus. That's why I love bonuses. You can get some real gems you never would have purchased.

We love the color and watermark on Highly Venomous.
Hip Hop Music is one of my favorite toothies. It's a southern that done well for us except that it hasn't increased much--probably because we put pods on it. Otherwise, the stats are good and it flowers every year. We have some seedlings with it crossed with one of our red eyed white seedlings that should bloom this season. We are hoping to put teeth on red eyed white daylilies.
I am not much into yellow self daylilies but this one is special. The color is so saturated and the flowers are large and flat. This is Holy Sombrero.
This is another southern daylily that does reasonably well. It is Horns and Thorns. I use the term 'reasonably' because none of them perform according to their published stats. That's ok with us as long as they continue to bloom every year.

5 years agoSherry so many beauties! Happy Apache strikes a chord and every other is just lovely. I am always happy to see ones with heavily ruffled edges open well for you although Celeste is closer or on par to my zone.
Maryl, Honky Tonk Barbie has such great colour.
David Half Moon Key is lovely and Honey Crunch Cupcake is very interesting.

Nancy Happy Place caught my eye but Heavenly Whirly Bird & Hey Soul Sister are wonderful.
So many H's but I only have two old ones.
Happy Returns is far from spectacular but it is reliable and I do like the soft clear yellow.

Nan: Everyone knows how I like yellow, but I like only certain shades of yellow. School bus bright yellow does not appeal to me. Hence I have to say that as nice as Holy Sombrero was in my garden, It was much too blaring a golden yellow to suit my taste so it found another home. One of the reasons I like daylilies so much is that there are so many variations of colors to choose from. You, not being a yellow fan, can find a shade you like and I can too..................Maryl

Sherry, there are daylilies that show color on teeth, often in addition to the gold or white. Whether it is possible for the a highly tooth edge without the yellow or white remains to be seen. There are hybridizers working on that trait. Jamie Gossard says some of his have red teeth--like Jupiter's Eye. We are trying to work on that trait, but the going is difficult. We bought Jupiter's Eye, but for some reason, it didn't get going for us. We might have to try it again. We try to identify any seedlings that show any color on teeth for further breeding. Here are a couple of examples.

Heman made a nice display this past year. Big flowers, tall scapes and less splotchiness than sometimes.
Heavenly Dark Matter makes a showy garden display.
How Lovely You Are is exquisitely shaded.
Honky Tonk Barbie is not in a prime location, so evaluation is limited. Below height and bud count. It has multiplied though.
I like Handwriting on the Wall. Very striking eye and triangular shape. Would be nice if a few inches taller.
Sherri's picture of Heavenly Hidden Treasure is probably closer to reality. This picture exaggerates a bit the red tones.
Heroes on Horseback --makes a statement in the early garden with its slightly disheveled wine purple blooms on tall scapes
Kay pictured this also. I was surprised what a glowing color Heavenly Dragon Fire is.
Heidi Hugs grows well.
Harper's Bazaar, as David noted, can be very nice. Last year not so nice as previous year.
Honey on My Lips has distinctive shadings and good growth habits. This close-up may mislead in terms of size; it is a somewhat triangular bloom.
Heavenly Starfire is a big earlier bloom that commands attention.
Heavenly United We Stand. Not the best picture, but I chose from 2020. We had a late dry period.

5 years agoMantis - Your Honky Tonk Barbie looks like a pretty shade of pink, as does Maryl's. Mine looked more of a reddish peachy pink, although the halo is more pronounced on mine. I received a plant that had hardly any roots, and that may be the problem. I'm giving it another year to shape up. I really like the name,

I have a pic that looks much the same. But hasn't met my expectations so far. Scapes should be taller; bud count, higher. Splendid Touch is a parent, not prolific here.
