Granite help PLEASE

last modified: 5 years ago

Does this granite (bianco romano) work with these cabinets (vanilla breeze)? We added cabinets to our existing kitchen and are now replacing our ornamental granite. I was considering just doing another ornamental light, but I saw this slab of bianco romano that had some of the yellowish cream color from my cabinets. Just not sure if I should do it or play it a little safer with the ornamental light.

It doesn't work for me. The granite reads as mostly a cool grey and the cabinets are a warm white. However I'm on an iPad with a wonky screen and you're there in person.

If you love the pairing presumably some fabulous ID could pull it together for you.

It doesn't work for me either. What are you replacing? Are you replacing all the c-tops or just the ones on the new cabinetry. What does the rest of the kitchen look like?

I think I'd go with something more solid in a darker color for contrast. But it would be better to show the whole space to get more considered opinions.

I agree the granite is too gray but if your lighting is not LED 4000K then colors do not look true even in real life. Monitors are never good for comparing colors .I think the ornamental works better BTW so glad you are choosing granite IMO still the best material for counters and polished is almost bullet proof .

On my monitor the cabinets and new countertop granite works, but the flooring doesn't go with it.

Is this any better or still no good?

Can you show a photo of the whole space, including the floors?

The floors are being changed within a year or two so I don't really need them in the equation. They were installed previously on TOP of vinyl and they're cracking. So they're gone sooner than later. get a pic best I can with the cabinets. We're painting walls as well.

We're under a bit of renovation here so excuse the mess but the kitchen opens to the front small sitting room and the back family room. There's no kitchen table. Our dining table is in the family room. Idk if that's relevant.

We're removing all the old granite. Thankfully my in laws have the same shape and will be using it. I'd hate to waste it. Perfectly good!

I'm not a designer and everyone has different preferences but I find the granite too busy for those cabinets. The cabinets are quite ornate (not really the right word but they are quite decorative) so I'd go with something more solid on the counters to let the cabinets shine.

I wish I liked the cabinets lol

The granite you had went better than the options you’ve picked so far.

have you seen this one? It might go better with the cream.

I like the bluish gray with your cabinets. Are you able to piece together a picture of your paint choices with a new flooring ideas with your pictures of the slab you posted yesterday? That will help show it all coming together. Likely your lighting will come into play so your cream doesn't lean yellow

Thank you all. Is colonial cream (not white) usually warmer than bianco romano??? I found a beautiful slab of colonial cream.

You owe it to yourself to check the porosity of that stone. You don't want this:

Joseph, what stone is that? Bianco Romano, Ornamental Light, or Colonial Cream, and how do I check porosity? Thank you so much!

Personally its too busy, go for a whiter granite, just with a hint of a colour running through it, more classy and will feel more elegant.

Colonial cream should be warmer than bianco romano, although variations in slabs make that kind of pronouncement risky. (We considered Colonial Cream and it would probably have worked better with our off white cabinets than the Colonial White DH fell for.)

I think you can google porosity values but I think a well-sealed Colonial Cream should not be a problem.

@barncatz Do you like your colonial white with your cabs? Do you have pics?

are you considering a new backsplash too? honestly I think this one too busy and dated. changing that (along with the new floors) will dictate what kind of countertops you should get. even if you don't install all three right away, at least choose them together. your style is super different from anything I'm familiar with though, so I'll let others guide that.

perhaps wood floors and subway tile? similar to this below, but with lighter grout and a less busy countertop.

Hi Amanda, I have a photo of the slab in my Final Countertop and Backsplash. I don't think I have a final kitchen photo in there, tho.

I think parts of my particular Colonial White contain too much grey undertoning for me to be crazy about it with the cabinets, although it has some cream undertones as well. (I like grey and cream together, as well so I don't DISLIKE it the way some people might. I wanted marble, which was nixed, probably correctly, for maintenance reasons.)

A slab of Colonial Cream was the very first slab I saw. I think it would have been better match wise, but there's something to be said for a counter you're slicing an onion on that makes you say "ooh" as it catches the light five years on. Good luck. (I do think photos have difficulty conveying the complexity of many slabs.)

Your cabinets seem way too creamy for that granite choice. Your floors don’t seem to work with it either. Keep looking and bring home lots of samples. .

Sorry, phone not cooperating..m Joseph, what stone are you suggesting I should be wary of? Bianco Romano, Ornamental Light, or Colonial Cream?

    Amanda:

Sorry, but I don't know all the stone names so I can't help. Nor does it help that the stoners just make up different names for the same stone. I do know that many of the lighter granites like Kashmir White are so porous as to be unsuitable for kitchen countertops unless you never eat, entertain, or live at home. Don't make me post the pictures please, and don't expect to hear anything about porosity from a slab salesperson.

I've seen two filthy spots where people sit at the overhang with their forearms on the top while using their laptops. Gross.

Maybe I missed where you said if the tile floors stay or go? If they stay (hopefully you have a loose tile?) then bring a piece of the tile with you when looking at slabs. Or you need to bring samples home. You can not ignore the floors - whatever they are- when making your selection.

Ok just found where you said floors will change in a year. Fine. But make that selection NOW so it’s all coordinated.

If you are going with wood then you have much more flexibility with tones of granite. If you will be going with a new tile then best to make the selection from a reputable source that can speak to its longevity with supply. Otherwise you are painting yourself into a corner and will be back here asking which time floor works with your granite. Good luck!

Go with Giallo light. It is a strong stone and will blend with your cabinets.

Replacing tile flooring is very disruptive, and it will cover a larger area than the counter top so I would do that before replacing the counter top. Once the new floor is in, then decide on the counter top, then the backsplash last (if you're changing that too.)

I think the granites you are looking at have too much grey and white. Look for something creamier. Decide what type of flooring you will want in the future.

My daughter has White Galaxy granite with off white cabinets that have cool undertones. Looks beautiful with her wood floors.

I wanted more contrast since I have light travertine floors so I went with Sienna Beige granite with my off white cabinets that have warm undertones.
