Guest bedroom Help

I’m currently making over my guest bedroom. I’m stuck on what to do above the headboard, and the nightstands. I’m considering a painted accent wall behind the headboard or some art. The nightstands were recently painted SW Pure White, and I intend to update the hardware. I’m not sure if it’s too much white that’s throwing everything off or the size of the nightstands. Please help

It is all so neutral. You need an accent color, texture, and pattern. You don't need to go wild - you can add it in the pillows, throw, and curtains. Consider glass lamps rather than the gray. What do the rest of the walls look like?

@Sammie J the other walls are bare and the same color SW Popular Gray.

A peel-and-stick (removable) wall paper mural would work well on that plain wall. Search on Etsy. There are tons of styles and sizing is easy. Plus, it will help you figure out a color to add to the bed.

Yes, there is too much white. You can easily put a color in here. Yes, wall decor above the headboard would be great. Find locally at an art gallery, or art.com. I have to say something about the lighting. Ceiling lighting in a bedroom or living room doesn't do anyone any favors. Much better is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height.

I don’t think it’s too much white. I would not do an accent wall, instead just add an interesting piece of art. That simple change may be all that’s needed to jazz things up. Either do one large piece about 2/3 the width of the head board or a grouping of 2 or 3 smaller prints. IMO the gray wall paint is clashing with the brownish beige carpet which is throwing things off a bit.

I’m loving what you’ve done so far. I find the room to be very calm and serene which is perfect for sleeping. I would add rectangular mirror over each nightstand. Also I would upgrade the lamps to so something with a glass or crystal type base. Good luck!

I think your nightstands are a fine height - they look less than 6" taller than the bed which I think is a good rule of thumb. However I think the lamps are a tad undersized. I also can't tell if your accents are gray or blue but they look gray? I agree that some color would be nice. I also agree with 2 or 3 prints above the headboard. You can find great stuff on etsy (we did a kind of coastal themed bedroom and found some wonderful ocean watercolors there). A previous poster mentioned the brown carpet clashing - I agree with that and might suggest getting a rug to overlay. I like the one beth suggested if it works with what you have. And maybe a patterned accent pillow or two.

Just want to add...overall I think the room looks very relaxing and comfortable already. Nice job, I’m sure your guests will appreciate it.

Thank you all for the comments. I think I have a way forward now.

Do you consider a contemporary feel... or calm serene?

    @everdebz calm and serene

I think the color of the bed upholstery is a bit off from the carpet. In the second picture Beth posted, there is a throw over the headboard. In the third, there are large Euro shams (24”x24” square) in the pillow arrangement. Adding either one of those would help tie in the headboard color a bit more and/or camouflage it. And I love the art and pillow selection by Everdebz! Now I wanna buy that tree for my space :). Hang in there, you’re in the home stretch!

I would add window panels in a pattern that incorporates the colors of the bedding.

You could put blue tape on the wall to see what size might work. Could be a challenge, but possible the tree above could arise from top of the headboard. Or canvas placed almost overlapping.

I like the ideas presented. I’ll change out the lamps for something taller.

The bedding has specks of a smoky blue color in it and that’s the color I attempted to pull out uses various shades in the throw pillows, blanket and lamps.

I wasn't sure if thin stripes, and if a linen/cotton fabric. Do you want more color - even a little would be good. A lamp or pillow could bring in a second color, even teal, and adding more sheen.

If the room is set up like it is - an accent wall or wallpaper with subtle pattern could work well.

On existing paint you could stencil a medium sized item:

@everdebz I would like to add more color, but I’d like to keep the calming serene feel to the room

Calming - a similar wallpaper could be calmer without that much lively contrast [of white with dark grey]. Could be 2 neutrals that are softer.

With leftover paint, experiment with a different sheen, in a neutral color... pale, subtle.

"Stencil over simple latex paint, plaster, faux finish background or even wallpaper if it is in decent condition. Use it as a single motif or as an allover stencil pattern for an accent wall. Be creative: overlap the design, use different colors, create your own allover stencil pattern, add shading, use metallic paint - possibilities are endless. You can even make it somewhat 3D by troweling plaster through the stencil. Sheet: 24" x 24.8" / Design: approx. 21" in diameter."

I love the idea of wallpaper or a mural on the wall behind the bed! It would completely change the room.

I am also getting 2 guest rooms ready for - hopefully - summer visitors. 2 things to consider
I am getting nightstand lamps with USB ports so guests don’t have to try to plug into a wall outlet
Make sure you have a large mirror. I am putting full length mirrors on walls behind doors when I have no other place for a mirror that would reflect something pretty.

I know you have bedding, but a mention that texture could add alot - if for only seasonal.
