As I stated on the other thread, go ahead and purchase the Kahrs installation kit. It works really well with newbies. Take the time to remove the staples. Remember to check the flatness of the subfloor. Use your brand new 10ft level (with bubble level) and check the flatness. Read the installation instructions for the required flatness.

Remember to sand down the high spots and float the Self Leveling Compound (SLC) in the hollows. The flatter your subfloor the BETTER the floor will feel under foot.

Do you think a scraper could get rid of the staples?

Also do I need to rent a heavy duty vacuum or can I just use my $20 Dirt Devil to vacuum in prep for installing the floor. I will definitely need to do some sanding down (first time, fingers crossed).

A floor scraping tool (the long one's with a sharp flat blade at the end...so you can stand up and do it) is perfect. A Dirt Devil is OK for getting dust out of corners...it won't be able to handle sanding dust from the wood subfloor. Nor will it handle the cement dust from sanding down SLC. You can rent a shop vac for that.
