kitchen cabinets quandary

Hey folks!

So we have purchased a really cool 1906 home in Denver. We’re the first owners since 1964 and it needs some love! We’re currently planning the kitchen remodel. The home is nice so we want the finishing to reflect that. However, we’re a young family, hiring most work out and need to be budget conscious. There are two doorways that need to be widened and a wall that needs to come down. So we know those will come with a significant price tag. So now we’re looking at how to save with cabinets. The existing cabinets are not salvageable, they’re just not up to the kind of smart storage solutions we have now days. We were looking at custom cabinets are still are. The price for those will be around 30k and they’ll look stunning. Inset, painted and very neat. We wanted to explore other options for cabinets and we’re hoping you lot had some advice one way or the other. Obviously IKEA comes to mind as the cheapest and updating them with some third party door fronts. Are there any other options or companies we should be considering to give us a high quality feel and match with high end appliances? I’m attaching some inspiration photos so you can get an idea of the style we’re looking at.

I have been researching brands that offer painted inset cabinets for my 1898 home recently and have found several recommendations for Shiloh. You might take a look at them if you have a showroom near you. I am also looking at CrownPoint (custom and expensive), Cabico, Showplace and a couple of others, including Ultracraft, where I recently found a door style that is full-overlay but very effectively mimics the look of inset.

The issue I have with inset is that in many lines, the frame that creates the inset look is 1-1.5" wide, which significantly decreases the amount of storage space inside drawer cabinets, because the drawer has to clear the face frame. Luckily there are some lines (like CrownPoint) that have begun making their frames the same width as the sides of of the box (3/4"), meaning that no space is wasted. If your kitchen is small or you want to maximize space, this can be an important factor.

Many people mix inset with frameles full overlay for those base drawers and you will save. that price is alright but is every detail included ? demolition/ removal/installation/all the painting/trim out??? .... you say you want /need to "hire most work out". Get a GC who handles the various tasks. And then you have a designer that he provides or you source and they coordinate this. I don't know really why anyone would install a full kitchen in painted inset cabinets, especially a young family being budget conscious, not to be critical, but there are tons of options w frameless full access cabinetry and wood coming on strong.....and you live in DENVER????

Live in the house at least a year before you consider something as drastic as removing a wall. In that time you can learn more about how living in the house flows.

Sometimes I find this space so helpful and sometimes is full of hidden judgement and know it all’s. Budget conscious is relative. We have a healthy budget for the kitchen but want to stay within it. The house is a stunning and was built to impress so doing renovations any less so wouldn’t suit the home. We’re hiring a GC and plan to work with a kitchen designer but I like to have my own research and ideas as well. “Not to be critical” I asked this questions bc I don’t know of all the types of cabinetry options; so I guess I should thank you for enlightening to frameless full cabinets.

And we’ll be removing a wall. It’s not original, it was for a bathroom added in the 1980s and it’s in the way. We agree we need to live here to understand the flow, and are doing so in other parts of the house.

Fyi: many Million dollar homes have Ikea kitchens. If as you state you “ don’t know all of the types of cabinetry options “ is true , I would really get a lib book or couple of issues of Fine Home building on kitchens ...Especially Before I would pull the trigger on all inset painted cabinets. Of course there are people who pay for a turn key result and care not to be involved much . Typically however instead of the focus on “ high quality feel “ the homeowner would spec out storage needs and type , general layout possibilities most suitable for the space and then on to your interface w designer and sorting thru details / style/ colors etc. re: High end appliances ? What exactly .. are they chosen ? Many times that can be unnecessary . Did you price that out?

If you are contracting out the labor you will not see a savings using Ikea and custom doors.
