I am going to replace the wood fireplace surround that was builder grade and that I had added panel moulding to a few year ago. It was an interim change made when I removed the filigree moulding and repainted the brace fireplace fixtures.

This is 60" wide at top of mantel X 51"high (no hearth)

We are looking at limestone surrounds and have chosen a style that is much bigger and substantial than the one that we currently have.

This is 73" at the widest part of the mantel X 53" high from floor to top of mantel.

I am concerned that the surround might be too big for the space, particularly too deep. Currently the mantel is 7" deep but once replaced it will be 13 - 14" deep with a matching deep in the new hearth. The room is 17 x 18' with a 9' ceiling. We don't want an overmantel because it is a casual family room but we would like the mantel substantial but not oversized or too large in scale for the space.

Any advise would be appreciated.
