Paint interior windows frames Black???!??

I'm itching to paint my interior window frames black. I am wondering if anyone has experience doing this or would advise to do it OR to not do it. I really like the modern look of the black window frames but my home had all of the windows replaces prior to my purchase (thank God for that) but they are white.

This is my design inspiration photo:

I watched Ty Breaker on HGTV the other night and they painted the inside of the window frames black, but kept the trim white. This was on an older home and I was surprised how modern it made the older home look.

If you like it do it. It's just paint and you can always paint over it

I couldn't find any pictures of the show, but it was called A Baker's Perfect Kitchen episode 8

Yes! I would Loeb to pant this windows black but keep the trim white.... The 2 things that I would be worried about is:

    1. Wear over time- does the paint eventually rub off and leave a mess?
    2. Trendy- are black windows trendy or here to stay? I would hate to introduce a problem when I have perfectly good new white window frames
    3. Since I have prominant French doors in my kitchen and dining room, should I also paint the doors black?

I like the black window trend, but I have noticed it only looks good if your windows and doors have thin frames (like in your inspiration photos). It just looks a bit too 'heavy' on a typical (say, mass-market vinyl-framed) window. It would look especially heavy on a typical mass-market patio door with a thick frame. In my own house, we used aluminum-framed patio doors and one small aluminum-framed window in the kitchen, and I think they look great:

    YOUR HOME IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

Thank for the pics and for your advice. From what you said, I think my Home Depot doors are disqualified from this trend. Please excuse my partially tiled backsplash and the mess. Current pictures:

Home Reborn, that's my door. And it's not paint. both the door and the trim are solid oak and stained w/both an ebony aniline dye, and ebony gel stain.

Sorry you think it's too heavy. In person, it's not. You can clearly see the wood grain.

Black photographs horribly unless you're a pro photographer.

I realize it's not everyones cup of tea, but it's my master bedroom/bathroom and I'm the only one that sees it.

I did my black windows w/the same oak trim (which btw, I did all the staining myself) I also painted this window black, but it was wood, not vinyl.

Same size trim as the door. Still too heavy? I don't think so.

In my kitchen I did solid walnut (which I stained and cut) around my black french casement window

In my other room, I have the white trim and the black french doors. (This room is not completed though. I need a new table/chairs and have to paint the bay window.

rfharmon,,,You can paint the vinyl interior black. there was someone else who did it and it turned out well.

it will not work for exterior though. if the window gets a lot of sun, the paint may or may not last on the vinyl. the windows I painted black in my pics were wood.

What are your windows? Wood, vinyl, ? I'd never paint vinyl as it won't hold up well over time.

It’s definitely my cup of tea, your house is fabulous and unique Beth!! Love it!

If these windows are vinyl I would not paint them. Just my .02 as it tough to impossible to tell how they will hold up and you very well may void the manufacturer warranty if it was even transferable.

Curious what you decide to do. I'm in same position and reputable sources say absolutely do not paint vinyl windows.

    N B - Correct, don't paint vinyl.

Painting windows that open/close is not a good idea because the paint will add to and alter the smooth surface needed for the windows to open and close and, if you're painting them a different color, remember that unless you take the windows apart, you're not actually going to be painting the entire window -- the repaint job will be pretty obvious as the window is used.

Do remember that anything painted will, inevitably, need to be repainted and can begin to look really awful as it gets that way.

If a thin black outline is what you seek, you might consider doing is painting <1" edge of the wood window trim or even painting a think 1" wide wood strip/board and adding it atop a current wood window frame. .

Thank you, we decided this was a bad idea.
