now dont laugh but why dont you consider some old school tricks. Those rubber wedge door stops could be shoved under the door while hubby is working , to immobilize the door, and pulled out after when the door is open. No new hardware required at all.

Not laughing! My first attempt was blue painters tape. If I can find something that works and requires no install, I’ll be a happy camper! It is been forever since I’ve seen or thought of those rubber door stops. I wonder if they’ll have enough friction to keep out my lab?? She is pretty strong and I had to buy door knobs for the house since can operate the levers.. Fortunately, the stoppers don’t cost much, so I won’t be out much if they don’t work. If we needed a permanent fix, I wouldn’t worry so much about cost and just buy the real locking door knobs.

good luck Becky. I laugh because I have doors in all my bedrooms that have stoppers underneath to keep them from slamming shut when the breezes come through the house. They wedge in well and the doors do NOT budge.

I would buy an expandable gate that mounts between the doorway, so the dog cant get to the door. I once had a collie that could open all the doors in the house, even the exterior doors. We ended up putting hook and eyes at the top of every single door.

@cat_ky, my dog opens my mom’s exterior door and let’s herself outside, too. That is why I selected door knobs for the new house!

Please remember not all 3M adhesives are easy to remove command strips, you may need to purchase them separately.

Your dog is beautiful. I had door knobs on all the doors. He turned them with his teeth. We woke up many mornings with the doors wide open, and he was outside. Putting the hooks and eyes at the top, meant, even if he did twist the knobs, he couldnt open the door. I actually started with the basement door, that he seemed to want open 24/7. An better way to do it than hooks and eyes for exterior doors, would have been to put on deadbolts, but, we never thought about it, since they were not needed, where we lived.

Since dogs typically dislike citrus smells, can you apply a citrus smell polish to these doors, or hand a citrus smell deodorizer near the doors/on adjacent walls to dissuade your dog? If your canine persists, your only recourse may be to secure your dog in another area of your home while your husband is attempting to complete his work. Perhaps some positive reinforcement for appropriate behavior might work?
