recessed lighting placement

Was hoping to get an idea of how and where to place recessed lighting throughout our kitchen and living room. I bought 6 inch 4000k cool white. Will those be okay? Also wondering if 3 pendants above the island will be too many? The island will be 78 inches long with countertop seating. Should one go above the sink or should a recessed light be above the sink?

Ceilings are 8’ and cabinets are ceiling height. We are also considering under cabinet lighting, any recommendations for or against that?

Any and all advice is appreciated thanks!

IMO 4” pots are as big as you need to go and the bulbs if you buy yhe right pots can be small in 4000K I use halogen fixtures but the bulbs are all LED 4000K As for placement the pots need to be far enough out from the cabinets in the kitchen to light up the counter . In the LR I do 4’ from the walls and4’ spacing same size pots and same bulbs. The LR ones on a dimmer but in the kitchen I do under cabinet lighting on one switch and the rest I don’t bother with a dimmer.

Either print your floor plan to scale, or take it to a big box store and have a cabinet layout done. It is much easier to layout out light spacing then. First thoughts are 4" would be better for this size kitchen, # of island pendants depend on where the pantry cabs lights are placed, and your preference for sink lighting is key. Some like pendants, some like separately switched cans, or the layout of the overall lighting will capture the sink in it.

Take the 6" ones back and get 4" (Home Depot, commercial electric orange box, 4 pack for $35, adjustable to 5 different color temperatures). You have a low ceiling, no need for anything bigger than that. I used 4" with 10' ceiling and it's very bright. Yes to the 4000k, it's not cool, just like day light. My dining room has a vaulted ceiling that we didn't redo...I replaced the old 6" cans with new LED ones, and they look so large compared to the new 4 inchers in the next space.

A note about 6" vs 4" - you can light a generic space with either, the spacing of lumenaires would be different though to account for the lumens and cone throw. It will depend on how much task vs general lighting a layout requires.

I got 4” 4000k lights per your recommendations.this is the best layout I could get. I just want to know if there are right and wrong places to put the lights or a pattern I should follow. Drawing spots on the picture would help for a general layout idea. Thanks!

This is a tough layout being tight and with the stair coming in. Joists will ultimately determine exact layout, but you can see I set up a 30" grid because that is what hit key positions with your cabinet sizes. But 30" apart is a bit too tight for 4" cans. The sink can be a pendant or 3" on a separate switch. Check your island clearance between the pantries, it looks like 40"ish and main circulation, so maybe the island needs to reduce to 72". I show 2 pendants 36" apart. No can over the stove to eliminate the hotspot on the stainless hood.

A second scheme showing a more uniform layout so you can see what happens over the sink, and the stair may be a little too dark (not sure what's going on over there).
