Kitchen Backsplash Help

We moved in to our forever home a couple years ago and inherited a very nice (but not our style) kitchen. I don't have the money or heart to tear it down at this time so trying to make some small changes for the interim. The thing we dislike most is the backsplash over the stove. Looking for ideas to either cover up or redesign. It looks like I can remove 15 tiles and put in a new inlay. However, I am really struggling with ideas since I do not really love the color choices in our current kitchen (greens and tans). We are more of a grey/blue/white kinda couple. Any thoughts?

I would a sheet of stainless since you are not feeling the kitchen choices anyways.

Not a bad idea. Never thought about that. Not sure if the wife would go for a smooth flat piece of stainless. I wonder if there are any options with raised designs or textured finishes.

Even the background tile and grout shade is off w the cabs and floor. Could you go ahead and just replace the entire backsplash? It would be worth it. Just paint over the avocado wall on the side in off white for the time being anyway.

@herbflavor... I thought about that. But honestly, I would want to stop there. In a perfect world, I paint the cabinets white or dark blue, paint the walls, and all new backsplash. But then I'm still left with the green granite countertop. And there is a lot of countertop!

This might help give you a better picture of what we are working with.

If “green “ is your complaint it is extremely easy to rid yourself of the green walls immediately. Then see w this change what happens w the counters in the space. You would find a difference. If the green counters still annoy you why couldn’t that be the plan: replace granite and backsplash? It could be something to give yourself a target date to do. “Tearing down “ the kitchen or painting all the cabs white or dark blue doesn’t seem required .

Understand your point. But if I am going to spend the money to replace the counters then I might as well do the whole kitchen the way we want it since we will be chamfer the layout a bit. That project is probably 5 to 7 years away tho. For now, we are going to paint the walls and cover/replace the fruit basket backsplash.

Ah, the fruit backsplash and green counters. This appears to be a 90's kitchen. I had this problem myself. Since you have wood floors, a great stove, and nice cabinets you could really change the look a lot and lighten things up with a new counter and backsplash in warm whites. A change in backsplash alone is not going to get you where you need to go as you'll still have to coordinate the backsplash with the outdated granite. If you can't or don't want to address the counters now, I'd live with things until you can.

Paint the walls a color other than green. I think a white would update the space quite a lot. I have seen images of metal trays and decorative grates or large cutting boards behind ranges I always think they are hiding inlay tile the owners tired of 😎. It is a quick and cheap alternative.

This one used the backsplash stainless panel mentioned above. Home Depot has them in 30 inches for less than 50 bucks. I am not sure if they have different sizes for your larger range though.

Paul, take a look on Instagram at @comestayawhile or look at her July 2020 blog post “Transform your mosaic tile backsplash for $30”. She painted all of it. While taking care of a new baby. And in the last month she did a new backsplash. If you could do a creamy paint backsplash for now, then figure out the kitchen Reno once it’s in the budget, you might be happier now?

and. Have you thought about a wood plaque or framed print to hang over the bouquet?

Thanks for all the input. I decided to rip out the tile and do something like what cd7733 mocked up. Still need to grout it but happy with how it turned out.

Whoa...you move fast...already fixed the problem! I was going to suggest a sheet of stainless steel in the same finish as the range.
Now, just add a runner rug on the floor in front of the range (I have range envy): it will need to pick up one or more colors of the new inset tile....or a longer version of what you have now.

Awesome job, @Paul_DE-7a!! Huge improvement! Thanks for the update pics!

Looks great! Please make sure to match the grout color closely so that it looks as seamless as possible. And consider painting the walls a soft white.

Thanks! I will post one more picture after I grout it. I'm going to use a biscuit color for the interior and then going to do my best attempt to match the existing grout for around the pencil pieces.

All done. Grout is a tad darker but closest I could find. Still better than the fruit bowl. Thanks for all the input.
