Laundry room reno - to stack or not to stack?

We are renovating our laundry room. It is 5'4" wide and 10' long. Washer/dryer need to go against back wall because too difficult to access due to narrow space as is. If we place them side by side at that wall, we are left with an empty wall on the left from where sink ends to washer/dryer. Makes cabinetry placement awkward imo. We would only have 38" to have cabinets on left wall because need to allow for clearance of laundry doors opening. Should we stack them on back wall right corner and then build shelves/counter to their left, continuing through corner and to sink? Would like a tall cabinet to store broom, mop, etc. Should that go next to sink? Do new stacked washers/dryers shake like these old ones? Thanks for advice!

Your situation reminded me of a laundry room remodel done by Gwen on the Makerista blog. She had a similar layout and switched to stacking on the back wall. I thought her room was stunning. I'm not sure how close her room size is to yours, but maybe you could get some inspiration. I've included a picture from her finished room and a link to the blog entry. As you outline, you would be giving up a lot of space and utility by putting them on the back wall. Lots of washer/dryers are available that are less than 26" deep, which would leave you 38" clear space (maybe less, depending on venting). Have you looked into buying less bulky appliances? That would be cheaper than a laundry room re-do.

Thank you. We want to spruce it up as we are renovating that part of the house already- yes, new appliances, as well as new tile floor, new cabinets, new sink, so figured we'd change up the layout as well...

We switched to a stacked two years ago and it was a good move. We put it in my large spare room and added a nice rug, couch, cabs and lamps. I can stay there and read or paint while doing laundry. Since then, my two sisters did the same thing. They love the stacked too.

As long as you will have a countertop adjacent to the equipment for folding laundry from the dryer, stacking may work very well for you. It gets old very quickly taking things from the dryer then to another room to fold.

Regarding the shaking, I am no longer an owner of a FLs, but I had two sets (first was a Kenmore, second was LG) and both frequently vibrated. It is more pronounced if they are not installed on a slab.

cburch - what did you decide?! I'm in the same dilemma right now - moving to a condo and trying to maximize laundry room space. The Makarista laundry room is gorgeous!! I have front loaders side by side on the floor right now and love side by side just deciding if I can live with them stacked.

I have a similar dilemma. The one thing I don’t like about stacked was that the dryer controls were up top. Now I’m looking at the LG Washtower, controls are all at waist level. So far it has good reviews.
