Accessory Challenged

Hi!

Here is my living room. I have a blank wall that I am not sure of the right way to fill it.

I like a good minimal look without feeling empty, and I think it would be good to bring some color onto this side of the room. I have some decorative objects around the house, you can see them in Photo 2 just on the coffee table. I was playing around that night. (Usually the coffee table looks like Photo 1. Except it is winter here now and that poor plant is no longer with us, RIP.)

Let me hear your thoughts!

I have been playing around with something like this:

I would suggest the wall needs some bright color to balance it against the rest of the room.

I might put two side chairs on either side of the sideboard, then either add a large piece of art or do a gallery wall with lots of frames. The side chairs will be great for additional seating when you have guests over. You can pull them into the conversation area, then put them back later.

These are console tables, but it will work with your unit, too:

Here is a thing I was playing around with - I like the idea of the tall plant on the right @BeverlyFLADeziner

Wall paper could add some unexpected design WOW, subtle but 'on the wall!'.

    Subtle, but classic grass

cloth and modern art would work on the wall.

The wallpaper idea is a fun one, but we spent Sooooo much time repainting / wall prepping this room (oil based paint.. a nightmare that I don't wish on any of you) that we couldn't possibly do anything more as far as "finishes" go.. this project is going to be more of an artwork / shelves/ mirror / something attachable situation

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors I do like the idea of extra seating. This is the hallway peeking out on the left: So i think I can pull in some black..

(I think this area needs a rug, but I haven't found anything 'just right' between these two rooms)

    Or maybe something Natural..

You don't need a rug on that beautiful hallway floor. I would add a tall floor lamp to the back corner near your window since your only other ambient light is the table lamp on the buffet.

I'm so glad you said that! I was also sad about covering it. My dad installed it and he would be devastated lol. And yes about ambient lighting. We did put the recessed cans on dimmers, but its not the same warmth as the lamp. Is a lamp next to a lamp too much lamp? @calidesign

    Love your rug and furnishings!

Look at allposter.com for prints. They have a great selection. I got a copy of the cover of a 1932 Good Housekeeping magazine of a girl shelling peas from them when I redid the kitchen in my 1930s house.

If you can source local artists, that would be great too. I think the room can handle a big piece of art.

You have great taste and have done your room beautifully so far! I would love to see you carry the red onto that wall. I think a very large scale artwork with an art light above would make a statement.
To do something less typical and more interesting, you could look for a fairly large textile art piece to hang, or find a big colorful silk scarf to have framed. Have you tried centering the red table under the b+w prints to the R of the fp?

@adalisa frazzini yes! I definitely think it should be something with dimension or texture like you were saying with the textile art. Hmm to find the right thing....

@adalisa frazzini, here is a close up.. The asymmetry is pretty balanced when this plant is happy.!

If you don’t mind my saying, I don’t enjoy seeing lamps and other objects in front on artwork if the resul l is that I am unable to see the work of art as a whole. My near-automatic reaction to a piece of art is that it is an invitation to look, so if something is blocking the view, it is a confusinG signal. If you want a pop of something there, consider framing a very high end piece of wall paper or more than one (but then your lamp better be worth looking at!)

I also think it would be nice to have one very tall slender object to the left of your tv instead of the short white vase.

I really love Beverly’s suggestion that that part of the room needs some color in the art to tie in the teal wall color and bright rug. Those are two bold choices and your art needs to stand up to them and carry them into that portion of the room. Also agree that a chair on either side of the buffet would help fill the space and serve a practical purpose. Also, the empty fireplace could look nice with something in it - a basket with throw pillow/blanket, or a few large scale lanterns, or a plant.

    User thanked ginatay124

@ginautay124 it's funny you mention the fireplace.. I've been trying to to put an actual fireplace in there but have been quoted insane prices for a fireplace that is already there! So it is empty. But I do like your idea of accessorizing it for now.

I think maybe it is the art in @BeverlyFLADeziner 's suggestion but I'm afraid it would be too busy when you see both walls at the same time from this angle..

@ital mover Omg I totally need something different on the mantle for sure

So, if you love the colorful rug and it was an intentional purchase for the space to complement the wall color, here’s my opinion: imagine I am wearing a flowing maxi skirt with all the colors of the rug along with a gorgeous solid colored blouse the color of your wall. What is needed to take my beautiful outfit to the next level? How about a large chunky v-shaped flower necklace with several “gems” in the colors from the skirt? That is what a large colorful painting or canvas would do for your large wall. To successfully use color to create a “wow” factor, it needs to be distributed throughout a space. Can you tell I love color :). But if you are really drawn to neutrals, then perhaps you want a neutral rug and art in shades of black/white/brown. Don’t be afraid of color if you love it - there is a lot of brown, gray, black, and white in the world :)

Now that I see the room from that angle I think you do need an art piece that is mainly white. Your original inspiration is the right track. I still say don’t put things in front of it that block it.

    I wouldn’t touch the fireplace.

Honestly, I think your TV should be over the long console, and then you should have some great art (with the orange or red tones) over the fireplace. I thought that the empty wall was opposite the fireplace, but where it actually is, it will put the TV at a far better height for viewing and will leave the possibility of getting a larger one later without having it overwhelm the fireplace. I think I'd go with just the TV and/or just a large piece of art, rather than a bunch of knick-knacks of any sort, which will just look cluttered versus the great look you have going on.

    User thanked acm

@User Thank you! yes I have photoshopped more vibrant artwork here and it looked overwhelming every time. I thought there might have been something I was doing wrong or missing. The circle artwork I chose is from minted, so I can play with the sizes enough to clear the space of the lamp. @acm oof, unfortunately I can't move the tv. The room is much more narrow in that direction and furniture would be very difficult to arrange that way. it would be under seated, and leave the other half of the room empty.. unless you do 2 rows of sofas Lol!

Why would you have to move the sectional if you move the tv? Currently there is only part of the sectional right across from the tv, so you 'd have the same situation if you move it over the console.

    last modified: 5 years ago

@shirlpp that is a great point! Hmm... Definitely a thought. There are a bunch of holes punched in the fireplace wall and outlets for the sake of the TV and wires etc that I would then have to patch sand and repaint. (The TV mount and all of this was there when I purchased the home so I ran with it.)

Just as an experiment if you’ve never tried this, momentarily borrow the small white end table next to the sofa and put it next to the pink chair instead, on the side that is closest to the cabinet (not the fireplace). Put the lamp whi is now on your cabinet on the table next to the chair and see if it is interesting to have the lamp in that locatio, although probably with a different type of table. Might not work at all.

You would have sun glare from the large window, but you could also get a big "_ _ _" TV. It just seems like you'd have the opportunity to enjoy the entire room.

I don't see teal anywhere in the room except the accent wall.

I would add teal mixed with the blues and warm tones in the carpet to the other wall with art to pull the teal into the design I would also add some teal in the other parts of the room.

    It feels lonely to me.

You really only need the art over the console. I like the colorful pieces since they bring in the vibrant colors you've used in other parts of he room, but you can also use more subdued art if that is your preference as long as you keep the size fairly large. You could also consider a large framed mirror, which would give you some sparkle and reflect light from your window across the room. For the floor lamp, I was suggesting placement by the large double window in the opposite corner of the room from your table lamp, to the right of the fireplace.

    last modified: 5 years ago

I also thought of the glare if we put the TV on the console.. What do you think of this?

PS I just got that white table (It is a Knoll Tulip Table) and i was playing around with its location. I think it ended up looking the best where the wood table is in this photo, and the wood table at the end of the sofa.

I think the teal in the new art makes the eye bounce back and forth between that teal and the other teal, trying to unite them. It’s like orphan teal. 😢

i think a very understated piece of decor is best because you want to keep the eye on the drama of the pure color and stark white of your feature wall. You want people to really be drawn to the center of the action. I prefer your initial choice.

the reaso i suggested experimenting with moving the lamp is that right now, your very dark curtains frame your window very strongly, and your window isn’t interesting, nor should it be. So I thought stopping the eye further inside the room, at the seating area, might be nice.

I also vote no on a dark bit of foliage in your new taller white vase on the mantl. Try an allium flower 😃

Oh great suggestion on the alium!

I totally agree with the addition of more teal items it just starts to look "patchy" to me. Maybe the circle art is the way to go..

Here is the new view with some minimal art:

@User I added your allium.. turns out West Elm has a faux stem. Perfect.

I am really trying to transition some color without being gaudy. I admit the lamp is more of a 'forest' green than a teal, but my bf bought it for me and so it is automatically perfect by default, right? So I think this last piece of art helps to tie that in along with the pinks, and being about 55% white. What do you all think

    last modified: 5 years ago

Of the minimal arts, i like the one with the blush and green and the one with the arch of gold. They are more than elevator music but not commanding so much attention it looks like you’re starting an art gallery. The abstract blush and green one allows you to include your own plant in an interesting way.

The extra chair looks best facing directly into the room rather than angled to greet someone entering. I don’t think you need the chair there at all visually. If you need it for extra seating for the occasional larger party, might try facing the chair directly opposite the window and then placing a small tower of art books on it.

    User thanked User

That's the best I could do with the perspective adjustment on the chair with that image but yep, the intent would be for it to be flat to the wall behind.. You know. I like the idea of the stacked books too. I also think my favorite is the blush and green one, and I'm thinking it should be canvas rather than behind plexi for some texture. . I think I just prefer more soft looking art than Beverly originally proposed.

I think the last piece you posted is perfect. Nice soft colors that tie into some of the pale tones in your room, and just the right size.

    User thanked calidesign

cant really comment about plexiglass. Lighting and reflections are part of the consideration. I get it about being unable to insert the mock up of the chair correctlY. What i was suggesting is to place it facing the buffet and the window with its back against the entry wall. Might not work.

i like your lamp and don’t see any color clashes with it and anything in the room or any of the art works you are contemplating. In most pictures taken from the entrance i think you should move the lamp a smidge further away from the wall.

I guess I would vote for a) a mural over the whole wall, but since you spent so much time painting, the b) giant artwork, or a series of giant pieces. I would also put a very large plant in the corner by your front window.

I also like the photo with the BOLD artwork and teal chair idea.

    last modified: 5 years ago

The bold artwork only seems to work in the view where you can't see the rest of the room. We need to look at the bold pieces with the view where it is to your side to get the best representation
