Boring Townhome Entry

Below are two photographs of my townhome entry from the garage. We moved in a few months ago. Dimensions are about 142" x 54". I feel like I need a rug and probably have two options. A runner for the full length or a 3 x 5. The flooring is LVP, Kingsport Shaw Journey Tile which reads a little more gray than the photos show. We purchased the townhome with elevator as my husband is disabled. He is now using an electric wheelchair so on his infrequent trips to this level, he'd be able to deal with the rug but I have to be mindful of the width in this space. In the first photo, there is a coat closet to the right, stairs up, then the next door is the elevator. In the second photo, the door on the opposite end of the hall goes to my daughter's bedroom. Does anybody have creative ideas?

I would remove the closet door entirely and create whatever you prefer as storage organization.. I would put in tough wall to wall carpeting, including inside the closet, probably in a dark blue-black tweed-y type utlitarian

It might be that you could cut into the plain wall to creat one long niche or a few box niches, or shelvinG. you could make them whatever shapes you like, put wallpaper outside or inside them

I don't understand what problem that solves.

I'd go for an interesting rug and a large colorful piece of art on the big wall. Because traffic from a garage is a bit dirty, I'd stick with a small rug rather than having a runner all the way to daughter's room unless you find something you totally love and Must Have. :)

@acm, yes there is a lot of dirt being tracked in from the garage. I have a mat in there to wipe my feet, but it still is messy. I plan on keeping the coat closet as is because we need it there. Does anyone have experience with the washable rugs, i.e. ruggables?

Not sure of your style, but take a look at LL bean's indoor/outdoor rugs and their more utilitarian water hog mats. They come in a lot of sizes. The hall might be a good spot for some nicely framed family photos.

Even if you want a closet might you prefer curtains to a swinging door to open? There is just a real jam up of space there

I have two vinyl floor cloths and love them. I have one in my kitchen and one in the entry. They have beautiful patterns and colors, but I can mop them. I got tired of rugs that got dirty.

Yes, I am looking at indoor outdoor carpets. I've never heard of vinyl floor cloths. Where did you purchase, @M G?

I just bought a Ruggable for in front of my kitchen sink 3' x 5'. I have been using indoor/outdoor rugs for a few years but found that recently, as I'm aging and having more trouble with arthritic knees, that I was tripping, catching my toe, once in a while. I really need to have a rug there so decided to try Ruggable. I LOVE it. It is much thinner than the indoor/outdoor rug and stays in place so much better than the others. No tripping on it, ever.

I haven't washed it yet, but that will be a bonus in ease of care - perfect for your situation. I honestly think it would work fine with a wheelchair because it is so thin and tight to the floor. No curly edges at all once it flattens from shipping. It really sticks tightly to the base.

You can look at the website for FLOR to see how they recommend their products be used. They sell area rug forms

@M G I took a look at the floorcloths and they are a bit too traditional in style for me. Do you know of another manufacturer that has more modern designs? Also, how do these react when there is water on them? Does the water just sit on top until it dries out? I apologize for all of the questions but I have no experience with these floorcloths.

They are heavy vinyl, similar to sheet vinyl that is used for whole rooms, so yes water would sit until it was wiped up or evaporates. I love they can be mopped just like the floor. Sorry, I am not aware of a store or manufacturer that offers more modern design In vinyl floor cloths.

Vinyl floor runners would be a great option for safety, ease and keeping clean. There are all kinds of styles and sizes to choose from. As with a bare floor, water would have to wiped up, but if you have a damp rug it would be a worse in eventually affecting the floor.

Then consider what to add to wall - art, mirror or something practical.

Do vinyl floor runners collect dirt from your shoes in an entry? I don't really understand the advantage if you don't want to track dirt from the entry to the rest of the house (which is why I have a rug in my entry (where we remove our shoes).

the the garage door might catch on the rug (due to the sweep). keep that in mind when choosing the size and thickness.

do you need a rug there? with your circumstances, it seems like it would just get in the way. it would be so much easier to hang wall art. the floor tile is nice.

No rug….the floor is fun all by itself Put a good wipe your feet in the garage.

I see black stair treads. Inspiration for that large empty wall.

    Is this it? St Kitts?
