Pine bark - ACE hardware store pickup.

Just a heads up/report:

Looking to make up more pine bark for 5-1-1 usage and ended up ordering 'store pickup' at my local ACE hardware. Not the least expensive and we have an ~8% sales tax but no S&H fee. I got 2 bags (2 cu. ft. ea.) for under $19 and I only had to drive less than a mile to pick it up at the store (arrived on 3rd day after ordering). I was a little leery as we all know you can get rooked/bad stuff ordering unseen online.

Here's what it looked like right out of the bag. Almost all bark. Very little in the way of matchsticks although I did pick out a few sticks and small pieces of wood chips along with sapwood curly Q's and ribbons but all that barely filled a small 12" tall, tapered waste basket that's 8"x10" at the top (guessing about 0.43 cu. ft. trash from both bags). So I was well pleased with the quality of this brand.

I ended up with 4, full to the top, 5 gal. pails of 1/2" screened bark plus ~2-1/2 gallons of 1/4" screened bark along with a couple quarts of 'fines'. That I know is not a lot to some, but for me it will last quite a while. :-)

About 1/3 of the contents of each bag would not go through the 1/2" screen. The largest pieces were about 1-1/2" diameter, so for some of you, you could just toss it into mix with no further work.

I chop everything until it goes through the 1/2" screen bc anything larger doesn't work too good for my purposes (conifer seedlings and rooted cuttings).

Just wanted to share an FYI about this brand. :o)
