I like having a TTC (time to close feature) feature that you can set, so you can never forget to close the garage. Battery backup is also a must and came in handy quite a few times when power went out. We have wood doors that are quite heavy for any person to lift, even the single door size.

There are many good garage door openers out there, so just look for one with the features you want. Ensure it has a rolling code opener, which prevents someone from capturing the signal and using the captured code to open your door. However, make sure you have a good installer and that they can provide maintenance over the years. Garage door openers take a beating and will need adjustment and tweaking as parts of your house shift or wear. You don't want it installed by a company or handyman who will be long gone when you need work on it.

If a garage door is properly balanced, with the correct springs, it should take very little effort to move the door up and down. That is how they are designed. In general, that means that a 1/2 HP opener is good for a single width door, but you usually go to a 3/4 HP motor for a double width door.

I recently converted from a traditional chain-driven opener to a shaft-drive and I'll never go back to the old style again. The shaft drive is compact, quiet, and mounts on the side wall and doesn't hang down in the middle of the garage. I went with a Liftmaster 8500, but there are other brands which are very similar.

I switched to a Chamberlain side-mounted opener two years ago. Much quieter (we have bedrooms above) and frees space where the traditional opener was suspended. Ours has a battery back-up fir power loss, deadbolt lock into the track and wifi monitoring.
