Insulating unfinished basement walls

Our 1915 foursquare has an unfinished basement. The foundation is concrete below grade and brick above; the concrete likely has a rubble foundation core. We have had some seepage through the walls in a couple of spots due to bad grading and a blocked gutter. We have (I think) addressed those core issues, and also had the walls sealed with AFM Mexeseal. So far the water issues have not recurred despite some heavy downpours.
I would like to insulate the foundation walls, but I do not want to trap any moisture behind the insulation. How should I do it? Foil faced closed cell polyiso? Above grade only, or both above and below? How does the insulation get attached to the walls - adhesive of some sort?
