Wood floor & border stain
We are trying to replicate 100 year old floors that were torn out after a (huge) leak. We loved the prewar character of this place and were crushed when we had to tear it up. We thought we had the floors all figured out - white oak 9" 4 finger parquet tiles seemed to match exactly and the oak, walnut and maple feature strip around the room suggested by our wood supplier also looked right to us.
In trying to replicate the look of older floors, we tried samples of Early American and Special Walnut Minwax. Either would seem to be fine in terms of color for the oak and walnut, but unfortunately when we stain the maple strip, it gets as dark as the oak and loses the contrast that makes it special. It also looks a little blotchy on one side. We wonder whether our old floors had no stain and instead just had clear coat on it that turned deeper amber through the decades which I read can happen. Can we stain everything but the maple by taping it with painter tape and then go over the entire floor with poly afterward? Will the stain bleed onto the maple? Do we need to just give up and do poly only without stain?
