Did they just cover the fireplace up..

I've never posted this side of houzz. This is my parents house which they bought in 2000. There is what looks like a fireplace chimney on the outside. But was clearly renovated years before we moved in. Does it look like a real wood fireplace they have covered up? The house was built in 1969.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It would be right below the picture.

I would say, not necessarily. The chimney could house any number of hvac chases.

If you look closely at the brick, this is an add-on, not part of the original construction. I agree that it might be related to venting a furnace of some sort in the basement.

In the basement there is nothing there, open floor. The furnace and other things are on the opposite side of the house in basement.

Is the purpose of your question that you might want to reinstall a fireplace? Drywall is pretty inexpensive so it might be worthwhile to investigate by opening up the wall.
