Replacing Wood with Iron Balusters (9/16)?

Hoping to get some guidance. I'd like to replace my wood balusters with Iron. The wood balusters are secured in the rail and stair tread via 3/4" holes. I'm assuming to replace with iron balusters, I should purchase 9/16" diameter. Is that correct? Note" I will also be purchasing shoes for the top and bottom. thanks

You'll most likely have to install 3 iron balusters per tread to comply with the building code's 4" sphere requirement. Keep the wood....

This is for an exterior stair? We replaced our iron balusters with wood, partly because of looks, but mainly because the iron rusted out where it attached to the steps and became unsafe. Water finds a way to the lowest point no matter how you try to foil it.
