Depending on your set up it’s pretty early to pot up dahlias in zone 3. If I pot any up here in zone 5 I wait until early April as they can’t go outside until mid to late May.

March is still too cold to do much outside. I wanted to cut some starts from my forsythia and pussy willow to root, but the snow just melted and it rained off and on all weekend. The lawn is mushy, and i didn't feel like putting on my boots. Maybe next weekend will be better.

Boy, you make March count for somebody in zone 3a! No plans for March with the garden, but I'm going to count our re-entry into the world of skiing as our March plans. Very happy about that! One day I'll do indoor bulbs, but right now it feels like they'd be buried under the mess and never enjoyed. I do have some things wintering in the garage that are showing wayyyyyyy too much life right now. Kind of worried about them.

No specific plans other than to keep on with my wintersowing.

Actually, I do have quite a few small sassafras trees I want to cut down, so maybe now that the snow is disappearing I will get out there and clean up that area Sassafras trees, covered in grapevine, with the added delight of poison ivy. Ugh. Not looking forward to clearing this area but it's encroaching on my veggie garden so I guess I've put it off long enough!

I always think March is spring, but in reality, looking at my photos, the garden doesn't start to look like spring until mid April. But, we can get outside lots of days some years to get the garden ready to look good by mid April. I took a look at my March photos over the years.....

March 17th 2007, Snow on winter sown containers...

In 2008. the crocus were late, not showing until Apr 3rd....

2009 - Snow again on March 3rd....

Same year, by the 20th, bleeding hearts were pushing up...

In 2010, Crocus on the 20th of March....

In 2011, the crocus were late again, then got hit by snow again...in APRIL!

In 2012, a storm the first week of March, did a lot of damage to the trees....

2012 there were already some early daffodils up, looking pretty spring like on the 22nd...

So, I'm planning to organize for working in the garden. Going through seeds today. Ordering supplies that we'll try to pick up with contactless pick up - I have a lot of pruning to do. We'll pick up bags and bags of mulch and any day it's warm enough, clean up and laying mulch. Sowing seeds under lights. Already have my few winter sown containers outside. Time to start repotting and fertilizing houseplants. That's about it. That's how it is supposed to go, we'll see how much of that happens. [g]

As for what to look forward to for trees, plants, bulbs in March... Crocus, Hellebores, some early daffodils, violets, bloodroot, that's about it. What I look forward to the most about March is picking up the garden work again, after not doing it all winter. Getting outside and working in the sunshine and the crisp fresh air.

I wish Houzz had the 'love' button. I love that Floral! Wow, you really have the daffodils really singing out there! I'd be pretty happy with that view out my kitchen window!

The weather is supposed to warm this coming week and stay that way for at least a week, so I'm planning on getting some chores done. I have to cut down last season's asparagus fronds, and I should probably cut down the raspberry canes while I'm out there (I have "Caroline" raspberries, which I find is better to hack completely down in late/winter early spring). The ground should thaw enough to finish the weeding in the vegetable beds -- I can stand in the rows between the beds to weed, no need to trample on the wet ground; the rows need some attention too. Would like to get that giant water trough ready to turn into a raised bed.

Our shed is being demolished two days from now, so I'll probably have to fill in the area where the concrete pad was with topsoil to get it ready for sod or grass seeding -- but I think I might wait because every weed seed in the area will blow in and germinate on the nice new topsoil before I can get anything else down.

I also have some "King Henry" viola seeds I want to scatter in the pasture to memorialize the horse that just passed -- he was my favorite, my big boy...

So, chores chores and more chores, but if I get them done now I can look forward to the fun stuff -- the planting and the mindless putzing -- rather than the clean-up.

Oh, also seeds. Lots of seeds to start. I have a few things going now, but the main indoor seed starting begins next week -- a steady schedule of things to start each week along with cuttings (salvia) and potting-up of stored roots (annual geraniums and B&B salvia)
