Hmm... it's a bit of a sea of beige/brown and it lacks 'life'. I think you need a larger rug, especially since your furniture is quite large. And as you mentioned, wall art. That will bring the room to life. Also... a floor lamp and some table lamps will be good. I'll see if I can find you some examples that will hopefully inspire you.

You could take the blue from the throw pillow as a cue for other things in your room.
For example:

You could put a floorlamp between the sofa and the wall. That will fill up that area next to the TV too and give a warmer light than the ceiling fan that now seems to be your only light source? A table lamp could go either between both sofas or on the window side of the sofa. You'll obviously need a table to put it on ;-)

And your curtains are probably new, but if you ever want to change them, put the pole higher up the wall. Longer curtains look much better.

And I followed the link to your pillows, they suggest a lighter paisley that goes well with them. If you get two of those and throw one on each sofa...

I only see one wall for art and it is set back....the fireplace is a possibility for a pop of life.

A few tweaks: raise the curtain rod to the crown and add another "stripe" at the bottom to bring the panels down to kiss the floor; get a much larger bold patterned rug that will fit half way under both sofas since they and the coffee table are so massive and masculine; put the FP mirror someplace where it can reflect something beautiful or interesting or that you want to see two of; put large art at FP and it will take care of the blankness you're feeling; limit the other items on the mantel to three maximum (the white items aren't working with the rest of the space.) Your credenza under the TV seems dwarfed by the weight of the coffee table but I doubt you'd want to replace it with something more in the style of the sofas and table. You can add some plants to take off the masculine edge and hang some art around the stairwell. The TV picture will provide all the interest you need on that wall if the rest of the room is working.

Hi, I notice you have painted the brick around the fireplace. You might consider adding an accent color on the brick...either white to match your trim or a dark color to draw focus to the fireplace. It looks like you have a darker orange-red or brownish color on adjacent walls. Perhaps that would also look good behind the fireplace. Here are a few examples from Houzz for accent wall colors near fire places.

I never even thought of raising the curtain rod. I've looked at pictures and it does look so much better. What color should I add to the bottom? a blue/green to match the pillows?

I was definitely afraid of adding color! You should have seen the before pictures. I'm more open now and will look for some bright accent pieces.

Color, Color, Color where ever it is feasible. I like all the ideas here, especially using an accent on the fireplace wall. I see you have a red wall behind somewhere already, but the fireplace is calling out for some definition. It should be the focal point of the room. Raise the curtain rod and use longer curtains, yes.

You have taupe and browns and red and two big black box holes (fire box and tv.) I would use art instead of mirror above the fireplace. Find something with decent size that fits there that you like and take your color cues from it.

Carolins - I definitely need a larger rug! It looks so much better that what I have currently. I really like how that lamp looks too.

The red wall is my kitchen wall. I just bought that mirror too. Sounds like I should have bought artwork instead!

I do agree with Terracegallery. Vertical would probably be better. I did choose this one (homedecorators.com) for the colours.

Your furniture is more hemingway traditional and would be best placed against the wall. I would choose a media cabinet in the same style against the opposite wall. I would also get pictures with frames that are made of wood. Add a bigger round mirror over the fireplace. Window treatment I would choose grass like matchstick blinds or plantation shutters. This would suit the sophisticated hemingway look. Bookcase, metal, elephants, ivory and glass as accents . Wallpaper in a grass or linen look with a chair rail.

Red ceramic that matched the wall in the adjacent space might work. Applecandi is right about increasing the masculinity quotient to work with your furniture. Here's a bit of the Hemingway feeling to inspire you.

Not sure how to change the layout. Here are more pictures of my living room so you can get a better view of my space.

Since your options to move the TV are out then I would suggest placing art around the TV. Add a tall plant or a floor lamp next to the fireplace. You need height and drama in this area. Console table behind sofa will help ground the furniture. Think about a zebra rug as an accent. What your room is missing is texture, color, and contrast. Place the emphasis on the art and not the fireplace. I would lighten the frame around the fireplace. Keep us posted on your transformation. It really helps when we can see your progress.

I think the loveseat is crowding the space, it looks very awkward... A coordinated (upholstered-fabric) chair would be nice in it's place. You need a color "pop" in the rug...

You have a lovely room, beautiful furniture. I agree that colour is the missing element. Think bold, not muted. It'll add life and depth. I love the rug suggestions by Pure Box, and also the bright art above. How about a couple houseplants - they bring life to a room too. Good luck!

Good suggestions. Larger rug with a splash of color that ties in with the color on the kitchen wall. And a glass coffee table to break up the weight of all the heavy dark furniture. The mirror placed on wall behind the love seat, and a great art piece above the mantle. I don't like artificial plants, but you need to bring some height to the space...possibly by the window? Happy decorating!

Try lightening up the room and the couch because you have a sea of brown going on with the couch, the tables, wood flooring and fireplace. See about adding large pillows that have some very modern pattern in them and are light in color like the ones shown below, as well as a throw to the couch. They really bring life to the brown couch. Also I would consider changing the coffee table to glass to also lighten the room up and so that it's not competing with all the rest of the wood. Also I think a large gold mirror over the fireplace and some add'l art would help bring life to the room. You have great bones...love the flooring, couches, etc. So you are almost there.

If you are going to replace the rug, the rule of thumb is that it should be large enough so that the front feet of the couch should be on the rug, the rest of the couch does not have to be. Ideally, the front half of the couch should be sitting on the rug.

Paint color feels like it blends in too much. I'd lighten it up and add a large tree with a red ceramic pot.
