I don't think wallpaper is an exterior product. The weather changes including cold and heat will warp the glue and paper not to mention fading. Do a fun color if you want something different. :)

Are you a renter? What would be the advantage of this?

latifolia, not a renter. The advantage would be to add some design to the front door vs. only a solid color. And if I went with sturdy peel n' stick, I could always take it off and revert to painting.

@suzchaps, how about using a pretty stencil on the door? That gives you some creativity in design but easily painted over at some point if you end up wanting a change in the future.

Wall paper adhesive, regardless of type, has temperature and humidity limits when it starts failing. They aren’t designed to be in an exterior climate.

Is your door wood? You could add trim and paint it a different color.

Mich, it’s the original 1940s door. Red really isnt my color so I’ve been wanting to paint it, but in the meantime I thought for something different, why not just try out some temporary peel and stick wallpaper. I haven’t started looking at designs yet. ;)

You are making this way too hard! Remove the hardware, paint the door with a color you like, re-install the hardware. Done.

Wallpaper won't be any easier, and then you have to deal with removing the glue/adhesive.

@suzchaps, your door is beautiful. Yes, one either likes red or not. Since you said your hands aren’t up to the challenge of stenciling, is there anyone in the house or friend who could help?? That could be your best option, IMO, as I also worry about the residual glue left from wallpaper, even a removable one. Although it might be as easy removing it with some sandpaper, who knows?

I will say that if you eventually repaint the door you’ll need to sand off as much old paint as possible or use paint stripper and scrape it off. Big job but worth it from what I’ve seen. And the hardware can be restored, too.

@suedonim75, it’s a door from the 40s so I’d assume, maybe incorrectly, that there’s a lot of old paint built-up over the decades and if one wanted to it should be stripped before re-painting. That, of course, is a huge job that maybe @suzchaps doesn’t want to do. It was just a suggestion and she absolutely could just paint over the red.

If the door has been correctly prepared each time it’s been repainted a light rubbing down with sand paper would be sufficient. If it’s been badly maintained and not rubbed down each time it’s been repainted it might need a more vigorous stripping. You don’t have to remove all the old paint. You just need to ensure you have a smooth, sound surface for the new coat.

This is just my opinion, but please don’t. The wallpaper is not a good idea. You actually have a nice looking door. Nice hardware. Even a sloppy paint job will look better than wallpaper.

Thanks for all your comments! Perhaps I was just looking for something different that includes a design, which is also not a long term answer, thus wallpaper. I know I will be painting the door at some point because I don't care for the red and I feel the color gets lost amid the red shades in the brick. Ultimately, I want a brighter/warmer/more welcoming color. I also plan to shine up the hardware! Maybe this is my early spring project. :)
