By itself, changing the location would not be a code issue, as long as there are no structural or utility problems.

The only problems would be structural. Depending on where you are and the construction of the building this could affect the shear strength of that wall.

Thanks. I already have a structural engineer coming out to check some foundation concerns about a load-bearing wall change, so I'll have them look at the garage too.

The potential problem may be where the door is when open?..will it extend beyond the end of the garage?...open inside or out?..never mind it may look odd that close to the end of the structure...will it interfere with unloading/loading the car?

@btydrvn The door is just a secondary exit to the side of the house. One problem I'm planning to solve is to create a straight path between the rolling garage door and the back of the car. The current setup has the walk path slightly impeded by the rear bumper of the car until the door is closed. I also want to add an exterior screen door, but the existing handing of the door would create an awkward walk path to get to the driveway. Changing the handing will create a clear walk path between the car and the rolling garage door while also allowing the screen door to open with convenient access to the front of the house. I decided to back it off a little from the previous 6" mentioned to be closer to 15" from the inside wall. Here is a photo for reference.

It looks like it it will be tight in any location. You might consider eliminating the door and installing a keypad which would let you operate the garage door from the outside.

@Charles Ross Homes It's been like the Existing since 1978. Why do you think 47" of walk space is tight? The side door opens to an area that is inside a chain link fence. It allows for letting a dog out, which isn't possible via the rolling door.

@Charles Ross Homes Ok. I see what you mean. Nothing will be stored in the corner at all after the change. The door doesn't actually come too close to the car for safety of the car. It's just not enough to comfortably walk between the car and the end of the door when the door is opened if you're carrying something. With the new plan, no one will ever need to walk between the car and the open door because they have a clear path with plenty of room to walk behind the car. The door to get into the house is very closely aligned with the new plan exterior door's position.

The other reason I want to move the door is to relocate the electric meter on the outside of the garage. I have plans for a future bump-out to make the garage a 2 car garage. For exterior clearance reasons, the right edge of the meter box would be too close to the left edge of the current location of the door, giving no place to mount the light switch on the left of the door. With the new plan, the light switch can move to the right side of the door.

Note that the garage is 27' 7" deep from left to right. When the garage expansion is done, the new bay's car entry door wall will be around 3' back from the left edge of the new plan's swinging door to give the required 18" clearance from the center line of the meter. Our local power company requires 36" of open ground space in front of the meter on the outside, centered on the meter (18" to the left and 18" to the right). The new plan will give 21" from the center line to the left on the outside while still being a comfortable distance from the left edge of the inswing door. Having the door's handing changed to the new plan also serves as a buffer between the breaker panel on the inside and the outside elements. NEC doesn't require this, but I like the extra protection.
