decorating buffet - eclectic style

This is a newly painted buffet table, wall stencil and vintage mirror in our kitchen. I’m looking for advice on how to style. The lamp and basket aren’t staying so anything is free game. I was thinking a vase with tall grasses but not sure on size. Also, the mirror may be a tad small for the space but it’s an old family piece that I really want to make work. Thoughts on sconces next to it make the scale feel larger?

I like what you’ve done in there, it’s a very pretty, eclectic, inviting room. Glad you’re not changing the stencil, and yes on those sconces. You have a good eye for mixing things.

Sorry, just hard to tell on my phone, but what color are the stencil and floor? Love your buffet. I like olychick’s idea of layering the mirror.

The stencil is a rose gold although does not look as gold/shimmery in person as it does in these pictures. To describe the floor, I'd say it's a cream/nude color paired with a muted slate gray. The floor will be replaced in the next 3 years so I'm not super hung up on it. It's ceramic title so the colors are matte/rough.

I like the idea of layering it too. What style of frame would you put around it?

Mirror does not seem centered over the buffet. It is a little small but I still think it works.

It's not - there is a heaving vent there so it's 2 inches off. Was hoping to offset it with some décor to make it less noticeable.

I applaud your DIY and work-with-what-you-have spirit. Good start, but the buffet area does need to be tied together and also relate to the room it is in. So here are my suggestions: The sconces are not doing anything for this space. Too formal. In fact so is the mirror. I’d move the mirror to another location. It would look great in a powder room, end of a hall wall or maybe in your formal dining room.

You could put open wood shelves above the buffet, stained to match the kitchen. Go thick and wall to wall...nothing thin or dinky! Then put a couple of plants in white pots , white dishes... no more patterns...on the shelves.. The stencil will look cool behind it. Speaking of the stencil...good job, it looks nice and neat, but it’s unfinished on the sides. It should go all the way to the wall, like wallpaper, using half of each “fan” shape to fill in the blanks.

Last put down some sold neutral area rugs to break up the checkerboard floor.

These are too busy for your space, but you get the idea.

The mirror and sconces are too formal for the kitchen. Would they work in another room?

I love the fireplace wall in your kitchen. You don’t really have a style....I think it would be helpful to go in a direction...maybe country farmhouse?

I like your stencil; I like your buffet. I like that your house isn't full of grayness and you have your own style. No, it's not country farmhouse, which I guess is opposed to urban farmhouse or industrial farmhouse. Yes, your mirror could probably be bigger for best result, but I say a mirror that has personal meaning for you that's a little small than a perfectly-sized one that came from a big box store. You can make your things work!

Not understanding about the heating vent, could you take a picture?

I like it with the sconces and the mirror together. I think with the buffet, that little area looks nice, even though it's more vintage than the rest of the room (which I also like - love the floors)! The only outlier now is the plant and pot. I'd move that out and wait to find something a little more in the style of the mirror and buffet to set on top. I don't think you need more candles in the area, but something more vintage like your candelabra that's on your fireplace. Or some older pottery pieces or the like. Maybe you have more things you could try there.

I like the idea of buffet lamps on either side of the mirror.

I like your stenciled wall, buffet, and mirror together. Maybe check out the book "British Designers at Home" for more inspiration. Great pictures and a slightly different aesthetic - maybe less uptight about rules & juxtaposing elements than on this side of the Pond.

There are a million frame options, but here is a visual with layered mirrors and an empty frame around your mirror...

I like what you have now. But I am remembering photos and ideas from the old Domino magazine that might work. Take the mirror off the wall and lean it against that wall about 2/3 of the way toward one end. Take a smaller picture in a complementary frame and put it so it leans against the mirror but is partway off it too. Find a gorgeous vintage-style table or buffet lamp ( https://www.lampsplus.com/products/style_traditional/s_buffet-lamp/ ) you love and place it just off center but a bit closer to the other end. Fill in with perhaps a gorgeous bowl you love and a vase (squat or tall) of flowers. Or something like that .

You have wonderful potential there. What do you have or would buy to make it a lovely vignette?

Consider style of kitchen cupboards, floor, rustic fireplace and dining table, instead of the buffet in isolation and I don’t think a gold mirror (no matter the size) or gold sconces suit, as it starts to lean towards ornate. Suggest something a bit more casual and layered

Thinking a bunch of plates on that wallpaper pattern would be pretty frenetic. The way you have it is very calm and cozy, perfect for a dining room with fireplace.

Nice piece. How about an orchid?

Thank you everyone for the pointers. I have some experimenting to do! I will post a picture once it’s fully styled. For now shopping my house to see what I can come up with. This is hung too low bc I used the same screw from the original mirror but another option. Possibly better flow with the fireplace? The hunt continues!

And to the question about the heating vent. We drilled into the wall and hit metal so we had to move two inches off which is why nothing is perfectly centered.

    Love it!

look at some of these examples and copy them. I think a nice piece of art would be better than the mirror.

If you must do a mirror, I'd prob do a round one and accessorize like in these pics

and make sure the proportion is right. I just copied and pasted a mirror, so these lamps are a tad tall, but you get the idea

This is the kind of vignette I was thinking of:

Kayla, you can try to put 2 hooks on the wall, on each side of the vent. You will be able to center your mirror and it will keep it from swinging on the 1 hook. Sorry, I’m a little bit of a perfectionist!!!

Such a great idea! Which mirror would you choose? Neither? Maybe I just pop for a new mirror and find a new home for the gold one..

I like the mirror with two side tall lamps the most:) At least on the pictures. They're less formal, than sconces, and give both weight and height, and ..I don't know, just look very natural there somehow.

    Very cozy house.

Can I ask a bit of an unrelated question: I see a cool round table in the background, it's kinda on its own..was it something that was in the nook before, or is it someting that suppossed to go to the nook, or..?

Agree with april...the taller lamps complete the look. Sounds like you have plans to alter other elements in the space, so this vignette can be your inspiration. You might consider adding a funky ceramic "something" on the peninsula in colors that will tie the areas together.

This is a kitchen so all decor should be kitchen-related....shelving, baskets, cookbooks, etc,

Just meant something like a unique fruit bowl...

The mirror is just too small, it puts the scale all off. Can you put it in your bedroom above a nightstand, bathroom hallway ?

Hey Kelly, enough w/the spammy lighting comment. You post the exact same comment and lighting pictures on every post (so far I've seen 4 w/the exact same) Are these your lights? looking at your activity, there are way more than 4. all w/the generic, "lighting can update a room, or is a focal point' and the same lights.

No I swear it is in spam I just ordered some lights this morning and these lights right then posting are part of my research on which pendants I want it hanging beside my bed instead of lamps and then I just redecorated so I am inspired and I’ve taken a lot of photos I am so I guess I’m just proud I want to inspire others to explore but I’ve been doing so no this is not spam this is just a very exciting new member of this group that’s into teal gold and lots of succulents!

I made a lot of mistakes when I first started ordering things from those sites and some of them are really cheap and I learned valuable lessons and I learned how to budget and going from a traditional style to mid century eclectic style was really really fun.

Kelly, your rooms look nice. they do. But all posts are diff. each person writing in for help has individual tastes. you can't post the same 4 lighting pictures on every single dilemma w/o taking into account the look of the room.

why not create a link under your name and post all the pictures of what you've done to your place? do you have before pictures? throw those in there too.

under your name, go to the "project' heading and upload your photos under "new project". This way people searching houzz can come across you pictures and save it to their idea books

You know you’re right and I will keep that in mind thank you so much for your input I will take it for consideration for sure. Have a good day

kelly, I just added an additional comment for you. did you see it? create your own Project so that people can view your photos . see my last comment above

    Beth I think she’s a hacker

Teal or green blue or absolutely one of my favorite color combinations this year specially teal like a dark teal

I’m not a hacker by the way I promise I’m just a beginner on this app and so I was excited to get some input whether it be just as long as it was constructed I didn’t mean to post the same ones over and over again but I was really proud of my color choices and that’s a good design is always simple and I tend to go a little over that when I should practice more edit everything and restraint.
