I hope others will chime in because I only root in soil.

Just a heads-up that roots that develop in water are different from those that form in soil. When you move your basil to a potting mix, it will have to produce a new set of roots that work in the soil.

This transition is not easy on the plants, so I hope you'll get some advice from folks who've done this successfully -- good luck!

Also, you basil looks very pale -- are you feeding it?

No, I'm not feeding it and it's under a dim light. Until it had roots, there was nothing to feed; until it had roots, I didn't want any top growth since there was energy (roots) to support that either.

All the videos I've seen have water rooted cuttings going right into dirt. I am rooting in rockwook, not water - although given the amount of liquid, I'm not that far off.

Any other thoughts out there?

As it's growing roots, that new tissue has to come from somewhere. Right now your plant is cannibalizing itself. Hope you can figure it out.

I'd use a bigger pot than a 4x4, more like a 6x6. If it was a straight rooted cutting, or rooted in soil cutting, I would say 4x4.. but you are using rock wool.

If you haven't done cuttings in rock wool to potting before... you want more soil room for the roots and need to kind of count the space taken up by the cube as not-soil. Rock wool does not always transition well into pots either- it's openers for oxygen can cause wicking unless you are careful about covering the top. And also, rock wool can shift PH as it's used, so having the additional soil can help mitigate it a bit.

Remember to NOT throw that into your compost bin once the plant is spent. It has to go into the garbage. Rock wool will not break down and will sit in the landfill forever.
