Flexible gas line in crawl space not to code?

I had a kitchen designer tell me that this yellow gas line that runs through crawlspace to my stove is not "in code". This is the first I've heard of it as obviously the house was built with it and passed inspections with it. This gas line connects to a solid black NPT fitting as it runs up through the floor, then connects to the stove via a flexible gas appliance connector.

Boise, ID. Is this KD correct, or is this just fine the way it is? The reason I ask, is because I'm going to move the stove spigot about 12 inches, and it looks like it has plenty of slack to do so!


If it's not in code anymore, then color me surprised. However, I assume that it's grandfathered in, and that relocating it that short distance should be acceptable.

    Only the local code authourity can tell you if it's to code. I can tell you that any time one starts moving gas, plumbing, or electrical around, it is typically a permit issue and it doesn't matter if it's just a "short distance."

    It looks to me it's out of code because there is no accessible shut off prior to the flexible pipe. If the shut off is further down stream on the flexible connector I believe that would be out of code.


    Why? Safety. if that flexible tube ruptures there's no easy way to shut the gas off.


    That said: building codes can vary from one location to another.

    Even if it meets code, it also needs to be bonded on either end of the CSST and grounded properly.

    Austin: If this picture is of the stove end of the flex piping, the upstream end of the flex pipe where the shutoff valve prior to the flex pipe should be located is completely out of view.

    The pictured installation would meet the code guidelines in our jurisdiction. As always, local code and interpretations may vary.

    It's code. CSST is great stuff. All the fittings are approved for use in, under, around and through everything in your house, EXCEPT running through or in cold air return ducts, and of course heating ducts, and no valves are required before a run. (code does require a value at each appliance as with any type of installation.)

    One issue is a appliance shorting out and using the tube as a ground, BOOM! So installers are required to electrically bond the tube to earth ground. I used 50 ft. of the stuff in August and will never go back to black iron pipe.

    Yea, I thought it was just fine. Last year, I did add a valve before this hose since I had to redo the gas piping at the water heater. So now, I have a way to turn off the gas quickly.

    Of coarse there is a gas valve behind the stove itself, but it's actually easier to run to the garage to turn the valve I added rather than to fish around behind the stove (good luck) and turn the one there.

    I think there is some confusion here:

    As others have pointed out, the product is CSST. It's generally code approved in this application unless it's prohibited by your locality. Your KD may have this confused with an appliance connector. An appliance connector would not be code.

    The only issues I have with what I see is a workmanship issue of a long, unsupported loop and (apparently) not having a floor flange.

    The photo is of the CSST connecting to a black pipe stub behind the stove. The shutoff for the stove would be above the floor.

    Follow manufacturers instructions for bonding / grounding. That's required on one end of the run.

    The issue isn't an appliance grounding through the gas line (the appliance must be properly grounded). The issue has been induced voltages from nearby lightning strikes.

    The fact that I can move the spigot in minutes vs an hour or more makes me love CSST.
