These are the left and right side of that area. I actually liked it before but it was a tangled mess of Daylily fulva - ditch lily and Monarda. I needed space for more Hosta and I have more sunny areas for the Monarda. It will take a few years to look good but I am happy I got it done.

Before, during and after. Still have more to do in the back left corner. Same story of culling . One real beast was (is) Lysimachia clethroides - Gooseneck loosestrife trying to take over the whole area. Ajuga was also running through the area. Needed places for new Hosta far more. It will take a while to fill in but I feel better getting this area done too.

an early shot of the path..not enough circles for the full length..the circles came with the house..I looked..couldn't duplicate them..and the distance is perfect for walking and I refused to put them further apart..
the pots were a strategy to keep delivery men OFF the path and the volunteer seedlings and ON the driveway..worked 90% of the time..there's always a fool isn't there?..

I wanted to point out how much the climbing hydrangea on the ash tree on the left has grown..I didn't plant it by that tree..the original plant 5 ft away was removed..this started from one stem..

nw, those pictures are gorgeous! Your hosta are so big and healthy!

nw I don't see anything embarrassing, I just see a smart and attractive way to divert foot traffic.....except for those few that don't clue in lol!

oursteelers..thanks!..we have a Ring and get video of our deliveries..you should see the way those guys look zig zagging and high stepping over the pots and plants..I wanted to make a sign or block with stakes and string..hubby wouldn't let me..some of those people are "not the sharpest tools in the shed"..Lol

peren..you're too kind!..I didn't say it but I'm embarrassed that this path is so overgrown..has been for years..but it's not in me to destroy plants..I tried to give some Clausa away..they didn't show up!..I want to move them..haven't done it..what do you do about your Lemon Lime?..

nw Lemon Lime does not spread underground the way clausa does. LL simply expands in a very disciplined manner. I took a little off the front this year for the first time in the decades I have had it. No worries with LL.

Hi all! Peren and nicholsworth your plants and paths and redone areas look great! Stupid delivery guys! I took progression to mean progression of the individual hostas throughout the year, so I have tons of those pictures and not changes to areas. I have so many pictures of hostas changing, so I will pic a few to show.

debra..it's rewarding to see proof in pics that our hostas are bigger!..I've decided not to complain about my path..I'd rather have plants that ARE growing instead of not doing well right?..so as soon as my ground is warm I'm clearing the path for my own peace of mind..I'm tired of worrying about delivery people Lol..

Debra, the screw is in the ground socket instead of the screw hole.

Sagae sport and the area around it since 2017. Already sporting by August after planting. When I bought it, I did select the one that had the widest margin on one of it's eyes, but not nearly as wide as what is seen here.

hmm, I may have planted that June too close and I moved Lakeside Keepsake for the newly purchased Well Shaked. I like this combo better.

Steve, I really admire your enthusiasm and hosta design. You seem to put the right color combinations together easily. I have ordered a number of hostas and am trying to decide where they will go. For me it seems I need to put the roots in pots and then space them around the garden until I find the right look. What’s your method?

I spend hours in the winter comparing hostas side by side using the Hosta compare tool Hosta Library Compare.

Then I sleep on it, order some more and then compare them. It may sound tedious, but I enjoy it. The next year, I may decide to move some (especially poor performers) or ones needing different sun exposures and do some more comparing. Generally, the ones I buy the same year are grouped together. By the end of it, my mind is spinning and I don't have the foggiest idea what looks good together (I'm still not sure). Thanks for confirming I must be doing something right.
This year I ordered a number of light centered Hostas (like last year, lol). I'm thinking of grouping these 5 together: Hearts On Fire, Prime Meridian, Cherokee, Proud Peacock and Marshmallow Sky. It may seem counter intuitive, but I think they are different enough to complement each other without being distracting (I hope). It looks better than this (to me) in the tool, but you get the idea.

Will it work? Stay tuned.

I'm suffering from HAWS. We made it all the way to spring garden chores, but now we have a rainy day. I may make it outside today anyway. So, if you're like me and dealing with Hosta Alphabet Withdrawal Syndrome, I hope this helps. One of my favorites, The King - slow to increase the number of eyes (could be from root competition) but bigger and more majestic in size. In May 2017:

Take out grass, buy more hostas, plant hostas and repeat! Don't we all do this? The pictures on this forum are gorgeous. So Steve in addition to everything else, you use a drone, omg, I have to learn how to quickly post pictures, I am soooo far behind!
