BLUF: I'm searching for someone to do the insulation on my home in Atlanta and the vastly different opinions of the different company sales reps has me suspicious of all of them and I would like some outside professional opinions.

Details: Family and I live in a 1750 sqft, 1970s single floor ranch style home in Fayetteville, GA with 3-4 inches of old, loose fiberglass in the attic and r-19 fiberglass in parts of the crawlspace but probably 2/3 of the crawlspace has no insulation at all. The crawlspace is vented and has the vapor barrier across most of the floor and they did run it up the walls several inches but the plastic is definitely not properly sealed to the walls and pillars.

The Issue: I asked for bids from several insulation contractors of which a number flaked or did other things to get them dropped outright. The two remaining are from a pest control company (who do insulation) and a smaller regional insulation company. The sales guys from each had vastly different thoughts on what was needed and both said or did things that make me suspicious if they are the right people to hire

The pest control guy seemed more professional but didn't know what I was talking about when I said I wanted to be sure that the top plates were sealed and said it wouldn't be necessary on the outside walls because they would be behind the vent baffles. Apparently he thought i was concerned about insulation getting in the wall instead of the hot/cold air. For the crawlspace, he recommended holding off on insulation until mold remediation could be done since there are some fungus spots which I respect, but he also really pushed for encapsulation which I told him before was not in the budget.

The local insulation guy seemed to understand what I wanted in the attic and provided a more detailed description of what would be done in his estimate and is encouraging me to include a radiant barrier. But he was also talking about simply spraying or fogging the crawlspace instead of cleaning off the fungus (he said it all looked dead). He also seemed to think the vapor barrier wasn't bad and just needed better sealing and that it would be ok to move forward with insulation.
