I don't think the current placement looks funny, other than the fact that it's in between your ridge and sink. (I prefer the sink being closer to the fridge.)

But it's not clear what the alternative plan looked like. Was the range 6" further to the left? If so, it seems that the cabinet to the left would be 6" narrower and the one to the right 6" wider (opposite what the OP says). Can you share the alternative plan to clarify what the differences are?

Yes, that is correct. The shift of the stove to the left would make both of the upper cabinets about 24 inches wide.

Are you able to have the duct for the hood exhaust in either of these locations? In some homes, the location of the hood exhaust duct dictates where the range will be.

I think I would prefer the upper cabinet doors on each side of the stove are a similar width, even if there are 3 doors on the R side and 2 on the L side. If you keep the current layout, I’d opt for a 30”+15” cabinet set on the right instead of the 24”+18”.

The duct will work in either location.

What's the purpose for the wall cabinets? Looks like you've opted for base cabs which I hope are all drawers. I don't like all the steps between the fridge (food) and sink (food prep.)

If I’m understanding correctly, I prefer the original because the upper cabinets around the stove would be symmetrical. That said, it wouldn‘t look odd to have the stove area as it is currently drawn as some people really like a larger counter space between the fridge and stove. My sister’s kitchen triangle is laid out like this and she says the most valuable space in her kitchen is the space between the fridge and stove. My guess is that there is 36” in that space in her kitchen and she wishes there was more.

Here is the inspiration photo. I don't need many wall cabinets because there is a large pantry in this space. The kitchen pitcured below is a bit bigger than mine, so the upper cabinets are larger. The reason for uppers is that I prefer not to have glasses and plates in lowers. I've had a kitchen will no uppers and I enjoyed it, but this is more practical. Yes, the bases are nearly all drawers.
