Help with beds for guest room, please.

Trying to furnish a small 10 x 11' guest room to sleep 2 adults, most frequently my elderly parents who normally sleep in a king size bed but would be fine in separate beds. Since sleeper sofas tend to be uncomfortable, I think 2 XL twins with comfy mattresses would work best for them or other single adults who visit. Problem is, I'm having a hard time finding nice XL twin size beds in a clean simple modern style at places like west elm, C&B/CB2 that carry this style. Anyone else have the same problem or have any solutions or suggestions??

FYI: Picture of room is from realtor listing and it's now empty. Window wall is 11' with 46" on the left side and 37" on the right side of the facing window frame. (Picture is deceiving)

This another similar one on Amazon that does come in TXL but it gets pretty lousy reviews.

Yep saw that one too I think I had posted it..🤷🏼‍♀️ But no one took the bait!

Yes I think you did, but after I read a bunch of the reviews about the plastic legs and cheap quality I passed on it. 😞

Did you get your headboards? May have to bit the bullet and order one from coley...now that you have samples.that you can try to match to the headboards........ if you just don’t want to take a risk with the other choices..

I really think you are not going to have any real high quality choices unless you go custom.

Sorry, thought I had answered you. Headboards arrive tomorrow!

Theresa made a good point about the Coley bed. It really doesn’t match the style of those headboards.

You may be right that I’m probably out of choices. Unless I can convince one of the manufacturers of the beds I love to send me a twin headboard and footboard with a pair of queen/king side rails!! 😄 I wish!!

This custom bed company ships nation wide and is made in America! Worth a call and get a quote...

I ran across this one which is 80” long. If you added a bunkie would it be high enough to hold the xl mattress?

    Here is another option.

Another one with somewhat square corners I think.

XL Family size beds?! Interesting Julie! Never knew that was a thing.

Another option, looks similar to the Bed in a Box one.

Here is a closeup of the Bloomingdale’s bed.

Molly, thank you for those suggestions! That first frame is meant for a std twin to fit in it, but I see what you mean about adding the bunkie so the TXL can sit on top of the frame. Only problem is the frame width will be 4” wider than the mattress while the length will be the same. Not sure how that would look.
The second one might be a good option so I’ll have to check it out.
The third one looks exactly like the Nectar frame, even the price which seems odd, and the reviews are just as bad both in quality and service... 🤦‍♀️

Yep, as I thought. DreamCloud owns Nectar so it’s the same frame!

I think the Bloomingdale’s bed is the same Classic Brands Claridge bed sold on Amazon and Wayfair for $111 that Julie and I mentioned earlier. That price reflects the quality but surprising its 3x the price at Bloomingdale’s... Wonder if it’s actually a better Classic Brands model than the other one or just overpriced? No model name or reviews on bloomingdales site, so who knows?

Custombedsandheadboards.com They will make any size bed you need...

Julie, I spoke to them too and was told a custom TXL bed frame starts around $800 and the shipping would be around $350-400 from Arizona to NC! Not to mention possibly waiting 2-3 months to get it. So I'm afraid that option won't work.

    Darn!

I really think you should try the nectar bed frame..it is going to be used very rarely...and if you don’t like the legs you can pick up solid wood screw in legs and stain or paint them any color you want at your local Home Depot...it is such a simple structure I think they all are about the same...

Has anyone suggested Ballard Furniture? Very reasonably priced, great selections. My sister buys a ton of stuff from them and it's all beautiful.

Yes Carla I have, but unfortunately they only offer beds with headboards.

Julie, I agree that they are all about the same and are all probably made in the same factory in China. But if I do settle for one of them I will buy it from Amazon, Wayfair or somewhere that has good service and no hassle returns, which I understand is not the case with Nectar.

I purchased 3 beds from online..all under $300 each....reviews where all over the place..but they are all guest rooms...and I am so happy with all three!

After reading MANY reviews of all of those Look-alike upholstered foundations with plastic legs (Nectar, DreamCloud, Classic Brands, Zinus, Hollywood...) I just can't do it. Yes, it's only for a guest room, but I can't bring myself to pay (even a low price) for cheap looking beds that will break when you simply move them.

Lower quality headboards are fine since they are mostly aesthetic, but bed frames that my loved ones will be sleeping on, I'm not willing to take chances that they might collapse from a broken leg or weak supports.

That said, here's my latest idea. This frame looks to be of decent quality and priced low enough that I MAY just buy 2 queens and 2 twins and use the parts I need from each to build my own TXL beds! Crazy? Maybe, but desperate times...

I don't love metal frames but with the wood piece at the foot in either grey or brown, it looks much nicer than all metal. Each twin and queen together would be $349 on Amazon. The black metal and square frame shape will also match the hanging rods of the headboards I'm getting perfectly!

Got the HBs and I think they will go great with the metal and brown wood frames...

Interesting solution! I like the headboard. 🙂. Julie’s iPad is out of commission for a couple of days so she may not weigh in. Just an FYI.

Molly, Thanks for letting me know about Julie. I was wondering why I hadn’t gotten any feedback from her on this option. 😁
So you like the headboard but not the frame with it? I know it’s crazy to buy 4 beds just to make 2, but right now I think it might be my best option.

chris, first, love the headboards they look great and love your idea for the base, assuming they all come in pieces and you have to screw pieces together? where did you find the base? I totally understand the issue with plastic on bed frames.

how's the quality of the headboard?

Thank you Theresa! The frames are made by Zinus and are sold on their website, Amazon, Overstock, Home Depot and possibly elsewhere. Reviews on those last 3 sites range from 4.7-4.9/5 stars, so I think the quality is good, and they do require assembly of the parts so the only adjustment I think I'll need is one extra wood slat in the twin width to account for the added length, but that should be easy to make by cutting down one of the queen slats to fit.

The headboard quality looks really good so they are definitely keepers!

I like the frame and think it’s ingenious to create one in the size you need. 😀

    last modified: 5 years ago

    Thanks Molly! If there's a will, there's a way!

Before I order the queen and twin beds I’m going to call Zinus customer service tomorrow and ask if there’s any other solution they suggest. If not, which I anticipate will be the case, I’ll tell them what I’m planning to do and ask them if it will work. Fingers crossed!

    Good luck!

I applaud the idea-- it's the kind of hack I would want to try. one way you can try to figure this out before ordering is by getting PDFs of the assembly instructions for both beds. it will give you a better sense of how it's all put together, what kind connectors they use, etc.

I once had a zinus metal frame. I would not recommend that brand for a king or queen, but the frame itself did seem strong enough that a twin would be totally fine. if anything, you might need to upgrade the slats -- mine were thin wood, fairly flimsy -- but that's an easy and inexpensive fix.

Hi IPad fixed..that was a pain ....but it is fine and didn’t loose anything!
    The headboard is awesome!
Metal frame looks good hope it works out for you..don’t see why it wouldn’t work..hope the corners aren’t to bad..but looks like the mattress sit just on top so the mattered corners should meet the frame corners..that will help!

Thanks for weighing in, IloveMod! Excellent idea to look at the 2 assembly instruction PDFs which are both linked on their website. I did that and the corner attachment holes and hardware for both look identical in the pictures, so fingers crossed it'll work.

That's unfortunate that your previous Zinus bed had flimsy support slats, but from the pictures and reviews on this bed it doesn't seem to be an issue. But like you said, an easy fix if necessary.

Ah, glad you got the iPad fixed and didn't lose anything Julie! That would be so unnerving.

Glad you like the headboard... I do too! I was trying to do a photoshop mock up with the bed frame in the room but I gave up and just sent the pics separate to show them both.

Here's a closeup of the HB which shows the color a bit better. I chose the brown wood finish on the frame instead of the grey wood to match better with the "leather" straps on the HB.

As far as the square corner issue, I think they can easily be covered by a fluffy comforter like in the first pic I posted of it yesterday.

I think it will work great..the wood piece could be lightly sanded and just add a darker stain to match the straps..so easy...I love gel stain it goes on so easy and no dripping..you just rub on with a rag...

Great to know about the gel stain! Love those pillows and definitely need to do a table with gold/brass hardware like that black one. Thanks!

Chris did you order the bed frames?

I need to put twin beds in my guest room, too, so love seeing all these great suggestions. Your headboards look pretty great, Chris, so I'll look forward to seeing what you decide for your frames. I know I'm going to avoid middle support legs along the sides, which seem like real toe-breakers to me.

Yes Molly, I did order them and they arrived in 2 days! I was nervous that my hack might fail to work but they turned out perfectly! I’ve ordered mattresses and will post pictures once I get those and have the beds set up.

That’s awesome, can’t wait to see the finished product. 🙂

Julia, it’s been quite a challenge but I’m so happy I found those wall mounted headboards that fit the narrow space next to the window and love how the metal and wood frames look with them.
Definitely with you on avoiding the frames with “toe-breaker” middle legs!
If the Zinus Suzanne frame that I got happens to work for your room, it seems very sturdy and well made and I highly recommend it. Especially if you only need regular length twin beds. Can’t beat the quality for that low price!

so happy it all worked, can't wait to see it all together...
