A landscape designer would be able to provide you with a comprehensive plan for the entire yard and you can pick which area to tackle first.

Hi you can do quite a bit with the terrain. it all depends on budget . if you just want to spruce it up a bit than increasing the size of the mulch bed forward to accommodate seasonal plants can be done. looks like you have the usual builder stuff .(boxwood's, some flowering spring shrubs, can't see from the picture very well. knowing your zone will help immensely . I keep saying houzz needs to add a zone tab for houzers with these questions, we can't tell what zone your in by looking at the picture . Next what type of plants do you and if married your wife like ? we would want to include plants that are special to you both, if we can .Next are you happy with your current walkway? Looks like that can be expanded . . How about security lighting by the front of the lawn or to the left so you can light up the entrance to the home for those dark winter nights? There is a lot to consider when even doing a small project . As a professional we want to make this a very special place for you and not a mix of what ever's. curb appeal covers a lot of areas ,door color , shutters, stone work or retaining walls . Are you or anyone allergic to fragrant flowers ? Other than that we can only make suggestions that may or may not help. with my clients we don't only ask these questions but much more.,Are you in a HOA? Do they have Planting guidelines? this is a house we painted ,landscaped ,expanded the entry way but it all works.

A quick immediate improvement would be removing the overgrown shrubs--then consult a landscaper.

Our situation is as followed, we bought the house a year ago and have done an immense amount of work. We would say we are on a budget not the tightest of budgets given that we don't really have time to do the work ourselves. I actually wouldn't mind installing the plants myself but also am willing to pay for someone to draw up the design. Maybe there are online design companies. For starters just wondering what immediate work I can do to make this look decent (i like expanding the bed) and then think of a way to do the work in stages. So plantings, I was hoping to do either this year or by march next year and possibly fix the walkway a few months after the plantings. My husband does not care at all about what is done to make the house look 'good'. We are in the NY metro area. Btw beautiful work on house posted and will post more picks.
