How do I make my entry way look better?

Just had walls painted, so everything is removed from walls, etc. What can I do to improve this area? It opens into living room with dining room off to side.

Thank you. I love those ideas. We have considered a new front door.

IMO, the barrister bookcase is dark, unwelcoming and immediately puts up a barrier to entering the home. The oversized chair in the living room does the same thing. I would upgrade and match the two lighting fixtures that greet guests. A runner rug that picks up on the same colors in the living room rug would be nice. Unless the family uses this door regularly, I'm not sure I'd add any furniture; just a pretty piece of art centered 5' above the floor. The clock in the kitchen is also hung too high. If you want help rearranging the furniture to be more welcoming, please comment and post more photos of the living area.

    Nice wall color!

I noticed there isn’t a nearby cupboard, so consider functionality as well. Would a bench or place for shoes be useful.

Looking at inspiration pictures on Pinterest can be really helpful in deciding on a look and how to accessorize. A runner and complimentary Roman blind on staircase would be nice additions.

Lighting can play such a big role and suggest changing both with the same style.

    Lighting and area rug

Rug and new overhead light fixture, and I would remove the large cabinet and replace with a gallry wall of photos or a huge favorite art work.

You didn’t ask but I’d like to suggest this as a table lamp. It’s not expensive

Because of your living room rug, maybe it would be nice to have an art glass ceiling fixture in your foyer. It helps also that is very different from the other light over your stairs

We might recommend removing the big bookshelf on the wall and replacing it with a console/mirror combo. We also might look into getting a rug to place in front of the door, and if needed a small/slim bench to sit in front of the banister.

I like it as you have it. It’s suitable for all the other areas. I would paint it a Tone of beige (orange) which will blend in with the other several orange tones and add Unity, Depth, and a Mirror upon the Hutch or lean it against the wall tipping up and place a small silk plant on one third of the hutch reflecting in the mirror. Place an interest object on the other side. Place a guest coat rack with a shelf on the wall. A floor silk plant and a floor mat.

Is this the main entrance? If so you need to address the functional aspect first and foremost: mirror, coat hanger(s), possibly bench+shoe storage as well as a table to set your things as coming in. It seems like the flow must be addressed first. This is a lovely house with lots of space but a bit of a challenging open plan layout? Do you have pics of the living room as well, the entrance way has to be addressed as part of the open floor
