It sure looks like that horrible imported bush honeysuckle that's become a plague in my area. If you find out for sure it is, please destroy it.

Thanks. I almost pulled it before posting, but decided to check first. This area used to be an overgrown garden the previous owners had planted. We cleaned it up and now I’m trying to identify the new growth coming in.

Not a Lonicera. It’s a Hypericum, imo. Do you have H perforatum in your region?

Agree it looks like Hypericum. Didn't suggest that myself because I couldn't come up with anything more specific - plants are of course easier to name when they are more advanced in development. Preferably to the point where they have something like flowers or fruits present.

I think I can persuade myself that I can see the perforations.

Floral, I’m not sure about H perforatum around here, as I’m fairly new to the area still. When I looked at the leaves of this plant and compared it to the hypericum I do see the little glandular dots on both.

Thank you Embothrium. I’ll keep an eye on the plant to see how it evolves. I was going to get rid of it quick if it was a honeysuckle. We seem to have quite a lot of that around here, and at one point it had taken over this area and everything else really. Now that it’s gone I’m seeing other things coming up, and just discovered several ground covers that I hadn’t noticed before.

I just researched a bit and looks like Hypericum Calycinum does grow in this area and is used in rock gardens and for erosion control - which is exactly what it would have been used for in this rocky hilly spot. And the leaves look just like they do on my plant. I’ll update once it’s grown a bit more to confirm. Thank you very much, this has been incredibly helpful!

It’s definitely not H calycinum.

That’s a good point about the honeysuckle, and I am aware of the native honeysuckle. I would have loved for this to be it. Or anything I can let grow for that matter. At this point my assumption was that this was not the native kind. According to our neighbors the honeysuckle that’s all around here moved in some years ago and spread quickly.

I guess I’ll keep an eye on this guy for a little while longer and either pull or let it grow. The branches definitely feel woody, like a bush. I haven’t noticed it in any other spots, but we have a large area so who knows. So much to learn, but you guys have been awesome, thank you!

Embothrium, we don't have the native, shrubby honeysuckle here where i live, only the introduced, invasive shrubby type and the vining types.
