What a miracle!

I did a cross between Siloam Paul Watts and Joan Senior a few years ago (they were the last blooming in my garden that year) and got 11 seedlings. I kept only 3 because the rest did not appeal to me. (Now I wish I had kept them and given them to my neighbors. Beauty being in the eye of the beholder, someone would have liked them.) But I digress.

Yesterday I started replanting the 3 remaining, because they need it. They have been in the same large container, in the same mix, for several years. The 3 are of different sizes, small, medium and large. The largest one has so many fans, and so densely packed, they are difficult to count. The medium sized one, though, I was able to count easily - there are 7 fans. It blows my mind every time I do this to realize that those 7 fans started life as a single seed.

Good increase is a really great asset for seedlings. We have several we want to introduce but are waiting for increase. I wouldn't say they are slow, but not as fast (in our climate anyway) as we would like. I suspect that diploid increase is faster than tetraploids. It will be interesting to see if that is true. We will have our first bunch of diploid seedlings blooming this summer (if our freezing temperatures tomorrow night don't hurt them severely).

It is amazing to think those large clumps started with a tiny seed. I've been thinking that too, as I count some seedlings that now have 14-20 plus fans. Very few of the registered daylilies multiply as well as the ones I've hybridized. The one I used to call "The Thing that Ate the Seedling Bed" (now reigstered as Cowgirl Spurs) has been divided several times, and now I have more than 40 fans in total.

Nan - My registration is CowGIRL Spurs. It's funny you called it Cowboy Spurs. I saw someone else today on another discussion board who is getting it this Spring called it Cowboy Spurs too. It's named after my female cat, Cowgirl.

Just seeing this post now . OH MY DEBRA ! Cowgirl Spurs is a real beauty and it looks like it is a relatively tall plant too. Just my style . Hopefully someone who ships to Canada will buy some , install in their gardens and in the future sell some to me !!!!!!!!!!
