You could shorten the width of the rod and move the curtains in a bit. Then you should be able to mount curtains above the window. I don't like curtains that hang off the sides of the windows rather than on the window a bit. They look more like fabric wall hangings to me rather than curtains.

If you don't want to do that, then I would take them off altogether. They don't look nice to me as is.

I wish I could move the window but it's centered on the outside, front of the house..

How is it centered on the exterior when the ridge is off center in the room?

Is there a decorative off-set gable on the exterior?

Maybe hang the rod higher, get more solid white curtains to hang in the center, and put sheers. Pattern of solid, sheer, solid, sheer, solid. To help camouflage the off-center and give illusion of bigger window:

The only trouble with this is light shining through, and you'll still see the shape. You could get really creative and mount string led lights in another arch and rectangle, mimicking the shape of the window behind the curtain.

If the window cannot be moved, I would change your wall color. It needs to match the ceiling very closely...this high contrast puts an exclamation point on the off center.

Yes, I agree with Lucky about painting over this wall with the same color.

Great comments! So if I painted this wall as close to the ceiling color as I can, what do you think about doing shiplap like the picture I just attached? Maybe that could balance everything even more? I wish I could move the window but on the outside of our house it's dead center. We have hired contractors to come on and see what they could do to fix it and they have nothing.

I think shiplap with highlight the off-centered window and create more of a focal point which you are trying to avoid.

Since that would bother me as it does you, I almost think that some judicious painting might help. Not a great sketch, but I’m thinking that using the either color which is on the left wall or the right wall might help fool the eye. It sort of confuses the eye into thinking the center of the room is over the center of the window. On the other hand, some might say it calls more attention to that area, but to my eye it's more soothing.

I'd take the rod and curtains down. Then move the TV left, even in front of the window a bit. That'd put the window in the background and not a focal point.

Unless the tv has to be in the corner for viewing I'd move it left. Looks like it is in time out.

I agree that curtains are making the situation worse. They look pretty bad hung as they are, too low and too wide. Even if you raise them above the window, which would be better, but even then, they highlight the fact that the rod is not centered on the arch. I'd use just a shade the same color as wall (once it's painted the ceiling color). Then move the TV over to center of the blank wall.

It's a small open living room so I am going to remove the TV and drapes and get some roman shades along with painting the wall white to match the ceiling and leave some of the wall color also. Such great advice you all gave! Thank you!!!

@cd7733 I love the way you expanded on my idea with your third picture. Makes my OCD calmer with the extension of the darker wall color paint onto the unbalanced wall.
