Starting a new asparagus bed

When we moved in here 39 years ago I planted 2 10' long asparagus beds. They're really pooping out and boy do I miss our own asparagus. Back then you were supposed to plant the roots 18" deep, but I think I read you should plant then more shallow now. Any instructions on starting all over? I know I can't pick them for a couple years, so I hope I can live that much longer. :)

Is there anything to do to revive the older beds? I think I still want Martha Washington, so the seeds can go rogue. For several years we were able to get asparagus from curious different places on our 33 acres, so I'd like to keep that possibility going.

Thanks for your input!
