I'm amazed by that every year, too. Here are two I noticed earlier this year, both Alec Cocker's roses.

With teas, I like how it's not only the new foliage, it's entire new branches that emerge bright red. Not a great picture, but here is General Schablikine doing that on a wet evening this past winter:

Well this is interesting! The most intense spring leaf colour among my roses is that of White Gold, bred by Anne Cocker, wife of Alec. It is a deep purple-red (unfortunately I don't have any photos).

The Teas all have lovely foliage, delicate, elegant, with a lot of red in the new growth. They shed their old leaves in March and are now leafing out vigorously. Another rose that I remember having beautiful new foliage is the Hybrid Damask 'Enfant de France', with acid yellowish-green leaves, tinted with apricot--if memory serves; I haven't seen it recently. The deer love to snack on that one. Just in general I love the variety of foliage of the different classes of roses.

I don't have a picture but Champagne Arches has such lovely foliage. It starts out in spring with burgundy red canes and the new growth is dark red, then has lovely feathery green leaves through the summer that turn beautiful shades of red and gold in the fall. Even if it never bloomed I would grow it for the beauty of the plant itself which is not a thing I say about many roses lol.

@joeywyomingzone4 if you ever snap a photo I'd love to see it, I was considering it this year but there's not much on HMF so I passed. Wasn't brave enough to order a rose that I couldn't see a lot of photos of haha.

Magpie I'll try and get some pictures this spring. It gets five stars for vigor and hardiness, I've never seen so much as a spot of winterkill on it which is impressive for zone 4.

All new spring foliage is exciting. Especially when you thought the rose was doomed. Hope springs eternal. Possibilities limitless. July realities not yet evident.

@rosecanadian Sometimes the spring foliage can be so striking and beautiful, but I feel like it doesn't get too much attention! My "Mystery Rose" which I sometimes talk about is my favorite rose, and I found it as a tiny baby sprout hidden among a bed of weeds. It was about to get pulled along with the rest (before I discovered roses, so I had no idea what it was) but I was so pleasantly surprised by the deep purple/red/green of its leaves that I decided to spare it. So glad I did, because the next year we realized it was a rose, not a random weed, and now it has a home in the main garden. It was by far the most beautiful spring foliage again this year for me.

Magpie, my Laguna is on the “other side of the fence” so while it is the best possible spot I have to offer sunwise, I don’t give it any type of fertilizer because I garden organically and most organic stuff is fragrant and I don’t want to get the attention of the deer.

I think this has made its growth slower but I’m okay with that. Last year was year two and I got one flush and then nothing. But I’m okay with that because this year the canes have grown by about three feet so far.

I have Laguna! Love your leaves! Mine is healthy growing leaves well now after planting it last August. It is expected to grow beautiful lush blooms! I loved its photos. I am hoping for a spectacular display someday!
